View Full Version : Auto thumping on downshift

Hey all - suspect this is telling me the 206Kkm old auto box in the TS 2.6 is on borrowed time.

Works fine on upshifts, but tends to thump/clunk on the downshift when I put the boot in. Also feels like its clunking more than it should when put in drive (idle is low, almost too low...).

Pretty sure that this combined with smokey guides, rattling chains and leaking rack means it will get a front end transplant soon!

Have you tried a fluid flush yet?

My old TR did this, did a flush and worked perfectly.

Reset ECU (battery disconnected for a minute blaablaa) and it will be better. Do the "reset autobox" trick after (Search).

Is very common for these older trans and I would service it and then drive it until it dies, it may go for years

Have also moved this thread to the second gen forum a it is where it belongs, cheers

Also check your front engine mount (but def. service it also)

I put in general tech as it was I figured a generic auto trans issue...? They all have the same basic design.

It's had about 3 changes of fluid in the 50Kkm we have had, as the juice was fairly manky when I got it at 160Kkm. It's clean now and stays so.

ECU reset a likely candidate - they run a litte TV off the car battery and hence it relatively often is flattened and jumped, or swapped out to get the LandRover going... Have reminded them of the reset process!

Worth checking the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) adjustment - multimeter required - as mine was doing this too but an adjustment cured the rough shift nicely. (TS V6, 220,000 Km). Check it before the thumping does REAL damage!

Will be nice if that's all it is. I'll check it next time I see the car.

If I can make the car last another 2 years, I'll just junk it and replace with a late third gen and swap the LPG stuff over. Especially if it means I dont have to stuff around with major engine/transmission swaps/repairs!

Mums cars do a very very hard 40Kkm a year - the dust and gravel roads, towing and the dogs mean their cars get very trashed...

It's the miracle car! Dictated ECU reset procedure to Mum over the phone, and voile!

Yay :)

You service your gearbox every 5000kms? you sure you're not talking about the engine oil?

no im talking about the auto as well as the motor it works out very expensive but the motor and box will last alot longer i had a camry and did the same and motor and box never died even after 800,000kms
