Hey there..

I dont know anything about the audio side of things at all.. Hence I had my set-up installed by someone else.

However its been about 2 years now and the front left speaker in the door 'Crackles'. I was just wondering if this could be a wiring problem or a Speaker problem? How am I able to tell when I take the door off?

They are JL speakers so I was also wondering how easy they are to swap with another set of fronts? Is it just a connection swap or a whole new wiring set-up?

Thanks in advance.

Rob.

ALRIGHT!!!... I had a look at it and wires and all seem fine... I played some music and it crackles/vibrates really badly.. I just slightly rested my finger on it and it stopped making the niose and was clear again.

So my question is. Could I put a bit of tape on it for a quick fix ( like drummers do on their skins) untill a can get some? Or would this cause some damage?

Cheers

Rob.

I would try using this speaker with another source or channel - just to eliminate the possibility that there is distortion coming through the actual channel (via headunit/amp).

But if putting ur finger is eliminating the distortion, then I'm more inclined to say you have a damaged speaker.

I would probably say that you may have a damaged voice coil.

Basically, the voice coil controls the movement of the cone. If the voice coil is damaged, the cone can move uncontrollably, and may over exert itself. The voice coil behind the cone, if it is damaged, can lose its cylindrical shape and will now rub against the magnetic gap (which is what causes the crackle sound) - therefore, placing your finger on the cone eliminates the distortion because you are limited the range of excursion of the speaker cone and therefore the voice coil.

I'm afraid taping it probably wont do much.

As above. Sounds like the coil.

I would also check the door for water leaks, just had a Hertz mid ruined from being drowned. :tired:

You will need to replaced them and that is not a hard thing to do since all the wires are there. :D

If you know how to take the door trim, take it out and have a look at the speaker if there is any dirt around the voice coil. If there isn't, gently push the speaker in and if you feel something rubbing then your voice coil is burnt. Also you can take the left speaker and hook it on your right side to see if it does the same thing. It sounds like a new set of fronts coming.

AS Above. Sound like voice coil. Are they amped? coz if they not, that probably where the damage was done. next time if you get a set of half decent speakers, make sure you amp them. it is more damaging to a speaker to be underpowered than over powered. I've been running 75 watts through my 45 watt speakers for 10 years now and never had a problem.
