I have searched the all the forum on this issue. Although there are some threads on this, but couldn't find and satisfactory answer. If there is already a thread, then can someone please point me to it. If there isn't, and you can help then please reply to this post.

The Issue:

When I start my 380 (VRX DB 2 2006) in the morning, it has engine-knocking sound. The sound remains there for about 5-10 minutes and then disappears. This only happens in the morning on a cold start. Every subsequent start during the day does not have this sound. I have seen the Mitsu dealer, Ultra Tune etc but none could help. It's so frustrating that I am thinking of selling it.

Please help!

it sounds like the hydrolic lifters in the engine. i have a similar noise, kinda like a ticking?

i've spoken to my mechanic and he looked at em, i wanted them replaced but he said dont worry about it. so maybe see a mechanic and talk to them about your Hydrolic Lifters. i know you can clean them and thats meant to help.

Not really the hydraulic lifters but the lash adjusters. Nearly but not quite the same thing. Very common problem on Mitsu 6 & 4 cylinder engines, but not usually until 100,000k plus. AFAIK not yet a proven issue on the 6G75 (380) motor, but now that many of them have done more than 100,000k it might start cropping up more often.

Yes, they can be cleaned or replaced, but pretty expensive either way. Especially replacement, you're looking at $1,000 plus including labour and probably wouldn't be covered under warranty ('normal wear & tear').

Sometimes changing to a lighter weight oil fixes the problem, sometimes putting some 'lifter cleaner' additive in the oil fixes it, at least for a while. Neither fix is sure to work though, but as it's cheap & easy worth a try.

Could also be leaking fuel injector lower seals (really insulators), although the symptom of this is a light ticking sound all the time, not just when cold. But very few Mitsu dealers will admit this is the cause of such a ticking sound and replace the insulators under warranty.

I had the light ticking sound regardless of temp for ages but in the last few weeks it seems to have gone away all by itself.

I got this ticking sound in the morning too but quiet down after 2-3min of driving, KJ380 is right. Change to a thinner weight oil, it will help.

Oh, I change mine to Amsoil ASL 5w30 fully syn engine oil.

Dude, I'm having exatly the same problem and MMAL are rebuilding my engine next month as they claim cylinder 2 is the cause of the problem. The details are in my previous threads on the issue. Add another one to the collection perhaps?
