Theres a few threads about CAI setups going around so I thought I would start another one!
OK. This may be a silly idea but i'm not a tech-head so I don't see why it wouldnt work...
Why not use the standard panel box but set up a pod in it. Seal it all up except for the top (put a rubber seal type bit on the top edge), wrap it in that heatproff type stuff and get a bonnet vent/scoop put in right above it?
With a bit of filter there it would have to be less water-absorbing than a front mount one..
No long pipes to get hot...
No changing of sensor...
perhaps getting a vent put in would cost too much or its illegal to do or something...
Anyway that is my crazy idea and would love to hear how stupid I am to think it up! :)

I think tbutchers car has a bonnet vent ... maybe he would post some pics with the bonnet lifted ... unless its for show :D

I think at the moment it's for show. His pod is just sits there with the stock induction still there in front of it. I don't know why you'd have a pod in the case that's been described. It wouldn't be better than a panel. Air goes in through bonnet vent straight through panel into sensor vs in through bonnet vent and swirling around trying to find a way into a pod then changine direction though the air sensor.

nah, its not a bad idea, its just some people don't like holes in their bonnets... they way you described it would would have to customise a box up there for either panel or pod installation, as the stock positive side of the panel box will not be large enough for a hole above it... and the pod would not easily fit in the stock box...
i'm sure if you look for a while on the net you'll find a good example of that style setup though... i think some rally cars use that way!

I've had a lot of trouble getting my mind around the idea of what will happen in a rainy day, your car is parked there, water soaks into your POD filter by insufficient shielding and you start her, and she gulps down a mouth full of water and chokes.... it would have to be a thorough design to stop water from getting to the POD when the car is stationary and allow as much as into the POD as possible whilst in motion.

my cai system would have worked and its sitting in my garage half finished but i just cant be bothered doing it now so i have also been thinking about a bonnet vent recently. heres a pic of how i would set it up to combat white devils problem

That is a really good design, but I recon that driving in the rain will still let water enter the filter

unless your driving in a hurricane with sideways rain, the amount of water that could splash of the bonnet over the little guard thing i dont think could do any damage anyways. the k&n filters are oil soaked so they can take some water no problems. its only if they suck so much water that they cant get enough air through will it then stuff up. plus id been thinking of some sort of plug to use in extreme circumstances.

I think you'll find the Evo bonnet vent has a lip. Besides, the bonnet slopes downwards and water doesn't flow up hill. Now, moving into rain at speed is another thing however I'm sure that Mitsu have something inplace to prevent any water related issues occuring.
