Hi everyone, I've just started getting a humming noise while turning right with the brakes applied.
It only happens on fairly tight turns (not hairpin) with the wheel about 3/4 lock and only when the brakes are applied through the turn..

I can only describe it as a low frequency squeal from the front left wheel.
I've checked the pads which have around 5mm left on them..

What else could it be, bearings or steering rack, tie rod ends?

Thanks..

I'd check the wheel bearings.

Its pretty easy, just jack up that corner of the car and try and shake the tyre from side to side then top to bottom. If there is freeplay there then the wheel bearing is shot.

Hmm, bugger

There's a small amount of freeplay.
Are bearings hard to replace? it looks complicated in the service manual.

How much would a mechanic general charge to do them? I may aswell get my disks machined while I'm at it but that may be a waste unless I replace the pads which are still fine.

This appears to have corrected itself..

Drove to Richmond (3 hours) it was making the same noise while braking in a straight line (I pulled over about 4 times to check the Melways, whereis got me lost again!).. (Take the second exit at the roundabout... WHAT roundabout?)

Drove back home again (3 hours) noise is gone..

Must have been something on the pads??

Yeah sometimes if the pads get glazed they will make a bit of noise like that. Happens on cheaper stuff more often because they're not as tolerant of heat.

Also with the wheel trick, shake top to bottom (with hands at 12 and 6 o'clock) when checking wheel bearings because if you grab it from the sides it may move due to play in the steering.
