Just bought a really nice KE Verada with 130k on the clock.
Also bought a Haynes manual, as the old codger I bought it from was not sure if the
timing belt had ever been replaced. Service books are all with the car, but no check mark for
the belt replacement.
Reading the Haynes, it appears that a special tool is required to set up the tensioner - can anyone
advise me if this is correct, and if so where can I obtain the tool. Just from the Haynes, it would seem
to me that as long as the tensioner is adjusted so that the alignment pin can be removed easily, the tool
is a bit of an overkill. My old TS was less complicated.................
Thanks in advance

Correct. The special tool is available from Mitsubishi. Part number is MD 998767.

You will need the tool, if the tension is not correct you can lose the belt or destroy your water pump bearings

Thanks guys, will see if my spare parts mate can get me one for trade.
At any rate, they shouldn't be too expensive.
Best regards

I think there were threads mentioning the cost from Mitsi (seemed insanely pricey to me, unless you were a workshop with lots of use for it)..... might have been in the "Parts Numbers" thread.

Guys have used a set of 90* needle nose pliers to adjust the tensioner pulley in a pinch.

I made a tool out of some brass strip and two 1/8" bolts to do my first timing belt then bought the correct tool to avoid the headache. I've used it three or four times now and it's worth the cost.

Jay Racing sells the tool but you have to ask if he ships to OZ. https://www.jayracing.com/
