2001 TJ magna exec....
Just wanting to know (with all of this stock front speaker business) what is the size of the mounting depth on the stock speaker and what is the max mounting depth of the door. Im sure that I can fit 6.5" front splits in the front door but I will not want to make any mounting brackets on the doors them selves.
Word has it that JB HI FI are having a sale on this weekend so I might pick something up then.
While I am here has any one got anyone got any how to's on removing the dash and installing new head units as it could save me a lot of time.

If you search on this you will find a few references - I went through the same thing a month or so ago.. in short:
1. Remove the centre console that houses the gear-stick and cup holders
I've got a manual so for me I unscrew the shifter and remove it leaving a bare shaft, then get your fingers around the edges of the gear boot and pull upwards - this panel unclips really easily. Once unclipped, pull it up at the back (near the storage compartment) and pull it out backwards to unclip the front part.
2. Remove the ashtray
3. Remove the lower part of the console.
This part is just held in with clips and pulls straight out. No really, it does. Mine was tight as put came out eventually. You'll need to unclip the lights for the ashtray and cigarette lighter as well as the power for the cig lighter. The power leads are keyed and only go back the right way around. With this removed you should see two screws. These are two of the four that hold the centre part of the console in.
4. Partially unclip the top airconditioner vents.
You don't need to get these all the way out, just enough that you can see the two screws that hold the top bit in. An important note is, don't unscrew the top two screws all the way or you will probably drop them into the depths of your car never to be seen again  Some people reckon you can get a screw driver in the side of the top aircon vent bit to pop it out - this didn't work for me. I ended up removing the panels under the glove box and steering wheel and pushing the clips through from the back. But I reckon the guys that installed my head unit just arsed things up which is why it is sooo tight.
5. Pull the centre bit out
This is the bit with the head unit in it. When you pull it an inch or so out of its hole you'll be able to see the plug in the back of the hazard light switch. Unclip this and the whole unit will slide out.
Hope that helps.. it is easier with pictures, but I haven't got any on me just now..
good luck.

Dude you wont need custom anything with 6.5inch front speakers. It is just that you will have to drill new holes. My fusions went in like a glove. The fusions have a mounting depth of 62mm.. fit no problems. :D
