hi, my car is a te v6 manual, and.........
Today i was driving along and i heard a slight ticking/clunking noise coming from the engine bay, which i could feel through the steering wheel, later on i was turning a corner hard to the left and there were several huge bangs. it sounded like a cv joint clicking, but it was 10x louder, and it shook the hell out of the car. i pulled over, inspected it, drove a little further, and it started the car started to clunk when changing from decelleration to acceleration, and felt like a cv joint had packed it in and was slipping. I towed it home, inspected the cv's and it is not them.
This leaves me with a busted diff or gear box.
1: any ideas on the cost of a complete reco gearbox and diff (just parts)
and does any one know for sure if it is just the diff or the gearbox. The car goes in all 6 gear, and makes the same noises in all of them. So i believe it is the diff.
2: also, any ideas on just the cost of a replacement diff, i know a quaife lsd is around 1500, but just a normal reco one will do me.
Thanks in advance.

nah mate, its diff or gearbox. like i said, it feels as if it slips then grabs, but not like a clutch, more like how the chain skips on a mountai bike. I also took both cv shafts out and put it in gear, but it still clunks and crunches. due to the fact that it sounds the same in very gear, i think it is the dif.
Yeah that exact thing happened to me a few weeks back and it was the diff. Madmagna had a stock diff in his garage which I believe he said was around $100, but I chose to just buy a 2nd hand gearbox ($89 from Jolly's). Going to fit it this weekend.

seriously, only $100? what should i expect to pay from a wrecker, or to get one rebuilt?
i am less stresed now, it is cheaper than a cv joint.

Sounds to me like you have a few teeth missing from your crown wheel. You could get away with just replacing the diff but for the time it will take you're probably better off just getting a whole gearbox.

how much is a whole new gearbox?

An absolute crapload out where I am :P not to sure where you are but check your local wreckers and get them to ask around.

well my local wreckers wants 99 for the peice of plastic that covers the gear shifter, so it will be a rip for sure. and if i get a second hand box, i dont know what knd of condition it is in, wheras i know mine is ok, and i jst need a new diff.
also, after the box is removed, how hard is it to replace the diff? thanks

If you're handy with a spanner and mechanically minded then it's a piece of cake, If you've never removed a V6 magna gearbox before I suggest doing some reading regarding the clutch before you attempt to pull it out.

i wrote the tread on diy clutch replacement, i am just wondering how hard it is to change the actual diff once you have it out.

pretty easy.

cool, thanks.
Anyone care to elaborate on how to actually do it?

yeah, i would also like to know this....
like do you just take the top off the gearbox and its there or what?
thanks

so take the gearbox out, take the top o the gear box, and the rest is self explanatory?

You actually take off the side but yeah. For a more detailed explination post up in the Mits-Fix section.

I'm pretty sure the diff is on the bellhousing side.
EDIT: sorry I can't really remember it's been a while.

Ive done 3 diffs in 3 years.. That sounds like diff to me.. Worse part it diff pieces start doing damage to other gears in the box when they break off. Can get rather messy. Look for a replacement box can work out cheaper then opening your up. I may have a diff centre come end of Feb as i put a Quaife in my box..

yep, where is the diff? it is in the gearbox right? so i dont need to take the bellhousing off so i?

also, where do you get you diffs?

diff is inside the box. you will find it hard to find a diff. will be alot easier if you find a replacement box.

ok, thanks man, the cheapest box i can source around here is $770, i will pull the box apart tomorrow and see if i need a new box too, i only drove for about 100 meters while it was bad in a straight line, so heres hoping, also, there was a few metal shavings on drain plug, but not too many.
So I'm in the process of removing my gearbox but I cannot for the life of me get the passenger side driveshaft out. Is it possible that the diff packing up has somehow jammed it in there?

nah man. the circlip on the shaft would be tight. Use 2 long screw drivers and pry it out.
I've been trying to pry it out with a tyre iron. Maybe it doesn't get in far enough. I'll buy some big screwdrivers tomorrow and try it. It's weird though, the drivers side one comes out so easy.

Put alot of pressure while prying it out with one hand and then hit the opposite side with a hammer then it will pop out.

if using screwdrivers, be carefull not to stick it in too far and damage the oil seal, once its off you will see what i mean.
i know where your comming from, with trying to pry it off, very hard to get the right leaverage, jack the car higher helps, just make sure you have some correct support for it when under your car.

just get it, push it all the way into the gearbox, grab the shaft between the bell and the inner cv, and give it a really good pull, and it should come, you need to get it so that it is loose for the first part of teh pull so you get some momentum, then it will pull the succker out. if that doesnt work, get someone with a screwdriver underneath to pry, while you pull.
Still couldn't get it out - I got the gearbox out by taking the driveshaft apart. So the box is out, but the inner tripod joint is still stuck in it. If I take the gearbox apart like in bellto's other thread, will that allow me to get the shaft out?
