View Full Version : quick Q about general running
Just wondering what your cars rpm is at about 100km/hr
Mines a manual 3.5L TH (99) and sits at about 2.3 - 3 thousand. is this running high or is that normal? seems high to me for such a big engine. I find myself in 5th at 50-60. I know the prev. owner put a new gear box in and was wondering if maybe they put in a lower ratio box? anyway, thanks

Sounds about right. The Magnas 5 speed gearbox was always a short ratio gearbox.
Thats way high! should be around 1900-2100 depending on several factors (driving uphill, aircon on ect).

Higher yes, but 3000RPM!? :eek2:

Aye? What you smokin' dude?

My Ralliart, at 100km/h, would cruise along at around 2700rpm or so. 110km/h was about 2950rpm.

Wow, the 4 speed auto box sits at around 2000rpm in top gear at 100km/h, One would assumed it would have been similar. :wtf:

Yeah man is about 3000rpm at 110. 2700 for 100. You do get use to it after about 4000k.

Well there you go. How bad is the economy at 100?

sits at about 8-9/100. not as bad as you think,

Not as good a 7/100 lol

Yep that's exactly what I see in my 4spd tippy TL (standard 15" alloys with 205/65R15 tyres). To be honest I was pleasantly surprised it was that low, expected it to be more like 2500rpm @ 100km/h. This is my first V6 engined car though.

Think the worse thing is the fuel tank is apprently 72l's but I can never use more then about 55l's without getting nervous.

That's alright Scott. You're in the airforce??? Yeah!, We dont expect you know any thing about tanks.

The 4 speed auto really has ridiculous gearing. First gear finishing at 75km/h or so is almost as daft as second finishing at around 150km/h. My TL 4 speed auto sits around 2000rpm in 4th at 100km/h and around 2200 in 4th at 110km/h.
Needless to say the gearing on the 5 speed manual is a lot different.
Not as good a 7/100 lol
At 100km/h you should return 7-8L/100km in a 4 speed auto, but step it up to 110km/h and the economy will jump to 9L/100km.

My 98 Solara 3.0 litre manual sits at 2500rpm at 100kph on a dead flat road in 5th gear.
I have my speed alarm set at 115kph and when it beeps I tend to look at the guages to see how much I'm speeding by and I notice that the revs at 115kph are 3000.
Been wondering about the rev count of my engine too. Glad you asked the question.

Just as a comparison, my TS 3L auto sits on 2,100 at 100KPH once the torque convertor locks up.
My TS 2.6L manual sits on 2,500 at 110 KPH.
Both cars have a variation of 200 rpm depending on the temperature. The hotter the day, the higher they read lol (assuming the speedo maintains accuracy, which I doubt)

This is the key. Chances are your speedo is reading around 5-8% slow. So your indicated 110km/h is actually more like 102km/h.

That's one thing i miss about my auto gear box when I had it. Cruising at 100km/h with a RPM of 2000rpm. Now that I have a 3l manual gearbox in, it sits at close to 3000rpm. But the sheer acceleration improvement on a manual makes up for that :D
thanks for that fellas. yeah i figured that the auto gears were different, having that argument w/ a mate.
So all's good then? well thats peachy, cheers.
Yeah fuel about 7.5 - 9 L/100k (depends on roads) at 110km/h
i really feel like i'd like a 6th ay. i also feel that that would set me back about as much as the car.
(about the fuel tank, i know the wagon has a smaller tank than the sedan, go figure why, but best keep the differences in mind)
cheers again

I find myself in 5th at 50-60.
Gee that would makes it run a bit sluggish! Or even jerky.
I don't touch 5th unless I am going over 80kph.

Really? I was taught to change into 5th at 60kph :eek2:

Depends on the engine, gearing & weight of the car. My Triumph TR7 V8 will pull 50kph in 5th at 1,000 rpm, while my KJ Verada will drop into 5th below 60kph on the flat (somewhere around the 1,1250 rpm mark). From the earlier posts, a manual 3.5 would be turning about 1,350 rpm at 50kph in 5th, so it'd probably pull OK at that speed - I'll find out in a week or two when they drop the manual box in my Verada...

I was amazed at the economy of the 3.5l autoon long drives when i first got it, uses about half as much as my old Isuzu Trooper 2.6l carby.
yes the fuel economy on the auto shames most modern V6's. I saw an average up to brisbane of 6.8. Compare that my dads VZ wagon at 10 :P
