As my VRX will be going into mitsu on monday morning to resolve a clutch slipping issue im just curious if anyone else has ever had a problem with their clutch slipping when launching. I've driven a hell of a lot of manual cars and have never in my life had one that slips when launching hard...

Anyone else had the same problem? I've allways thought that the mitsu clutches did the job fine in stock form...

Cheers Boys n Girls

bad first owner can damage a clutch easily

not burnouts or anything...but if they are simply a bad manual driver it can slip

and when it did, damn it was bad!! i was on holday in darwin.. needed to dial up 5grand before the car moved forward!!!!!!! it was soo embarrasing driving down the stuart highway at 60km/hour in 5th gear almost 5000rpm!!! :bowrofl:

so glad i didnt have to drive it home like that!

It sounds like it may only need adjusting.

Where is your clutch point?....Is it "high"? - mine is! It makes it hard to launch well, but makes for fast, clean gear changes.

Does the clutch slip if you try driving it up a steep incline, in a higher gear than you normally would (say 4th gear) or only when launching?

If it slips on an incline then it is on it's way out, otherwise it may just need adjusting.

It doesn't appear to be slipping only when i launch it hard... I don't know if its my driving but like I say i've never had any problem with launching other manuals in hi or low revs so this is weird lol

Question, does a slipping clutch do seriouse damage? I've been told it does but it doesn't feel like it is...

A slipping clutch itself won't cause any real damage, but if the clutch is worn down then it could start to eat through the flywheel, meaning you would have to get that macheined aswell if it isn't to baddly damaged :D

PS. My TF does the same sometimes too, only after I have been giving it a hard time and it heats up, it will start to slip on high loadings. Does it do it all the time? like will it do it straight away once the cars warmed up or only after a while of driving?

Mine does it 5% of the time. The rest its perfect. When it does though, i'll take off quick in first, wake it into second and it peaks out to 6grand straight away and the car doesnt go anywhere anymore.

Slipping clutch = heat which can burn the flywheel, or boil the fluid which can cause it to become viscous and block the master/slave cylinders.

My Ralliart's clutch was exactly the same as yours Blake.

I recently had it replaced under warranty (after a s*itfight with Mitsu) and now it is perfect.

As a sidenote, the flywheels in the TJ Magnas cant be machined, it has to be replaced, and you cant adjust them either.

I guess the clutches are just sensitive or maybe some were faulty.

Get it replaced, you will notice a huge difference.

Yeah im going down monday to get em to check it over, I just gave it a test on the way home from work. Launching from around 2000RPM fine, Launching from 3500 - 4000 PRM it slips...

When launching what RPM do you guys normally dial it up at? Also when the clutch slips do you ever see smoke? Coz at the drags smoke was pooring out from under the car and I noticed smoke again today...

Oh well long as its replaced under warranty its all good.

I was told they will not replace the clutch plate under warranty as that is wear and tear. A bloke told me that they usually tell you this after they have the car in pieces and basically your left with not much chioce but to pay them for a new clutch plate, so be careful

This is why i havent let Mitsu touch my car yet. That and also i don't want some apprentice pulling my car apart when its something this major

If its the pressure plate or something they'll replace it. Anyway, if your going to go to the trouble of pulling the thing apart, your best to replace the whole assembly

P.S if i launch at 4,000rpm all i get is massive wheel spin

All good points, but I would rather wheel spin knowing the clutch is doing what it should :D

if i launched at anything above 2K i ended with wheel spin :( made launching a mongrel!!

Same here, wheels will spin if I let out the clutch quickly above about 2000 rpm. If you rev to 3-4000 rpm and let the clutch out slowly to avoid wheelspin, this will wear it out sooner.
Drive up a mild incline in 4th or 5th gear and give it full throttle. If the revs shoot up without going much faster, then the clutch is just about stuffed. Start saving for a new one and treat it gently.

same goes here...

tried some vicious launcing at the AIR at the zoom nationals, and yer, pretty savage!! above 2k and all it did was smoke!

my new found love is to make the wheels smoke from a 60km/hour rolling start in 3rd gear when boost hits :D becomes a rolling smoke stack!!! :bowrofl:

BTW Slipping clutch is not going to be covered under warranty by any manufacturer unless:

A) Proven fault with clutch cylinder which has caused insufficient hydraulic pressure (causes slip).

B) Faulty pressure plate, you check that all fingers are at equal height, and the wear pattern on the clutch face should be even throughout its radius.

C) Extremely low Kms (<10KKMs?) and you are the first owner with possible earlier reports of clutch slipping; they trust that you have not abused the vehicle.

We have never paid out a clutch claim unless one of the above is met. This could just be a case of the prior owner not knowing how to drive, or that they KNEW how to drive

My TR's clutch only started slipping at about 240,000kms, when I got the heavy duty unit.

The clutch on my TH doesn't slip but has a savage clunk going from 1st to 2nd,
especially when cold. Also hard to get into reverse sometimes. 60k on clock.

Mitsiman tells me clutch springs are on the way out and to get it changed before
some bearing inside seizes, coz then it will require complete engine removal to
pull the bearing off.

Local Mitsu mechanic has same car, his does the same thing and he's not
worried at all, still tows caravans and stuff.

So, if I can come up with a lazy $900 for a H/D clutch + about 5 hrs. labor,
I'm laughing.

Might just spend that on extractors etc. and drive gently.

Then I can look across at Commo drivers and go " Yeah, I could blow you away
but I just don't feel like it today "

Yes, good point.

I really should risk ***ing up my investment in return for a notch on the steering wheel.

What was I thinking? :)

blake, even though mine is a 2nd gen, it was doing exactly what you are describing (minus smoke). As soon as the revs climbed the clutch would slip. This happened on launch and when flatfooting it on the highway.

Well, i had a hell of a fight getting them to replace my clutch under warranty.

But, after a month and some legal action, it happened.

They first told me nothing wrong with it, then, on the second complaint, said it was driver abuse (wear and tear) and is not covered.

Then, on the third complaint, they said they would pull it apart and if they see it is faulty then it is there cost, if it not faulty, my cost. Sort of got you by the balls once they have the car apart, but what can you do.

They pulled it out and miraculously, admitted it to be faulty and replaced it.

Maybe it was a phone call from a certain legal department that helped their decision.

But, now, it is perfect, couldnt be happier and the car is so much better to drive.
