Got the bulb out just now and there's no markings on it at all. It's a wedge type, that's the limit of my knowledge.

If you are going to put an led in the c pillar light,i suggest you use only this type, there are several ebay sellers that have the "flank type' as any other led will not give a direct shine....theses are great in ant sideways applications...number plate lights as well

I havent used these ones before, but be aware that they can be a bit tight to get in...

cheers..

Absolutely agree with Maggie3.5 - these bulbs look weird, like a piece of circuit board with a white square/yellow dot on it..... the yellow dot is the SMD (surface-mounted) LED...... and they work awesomely well in the C-pillar lights IMHO.

I worried that polarity might be an issue, but it wasn't in my cars.

One slight mod I had to make to the ones I bought ....... the circuit board stuff which plugs into the T10 lamp-holder was a bit too wide..... I filed a small amount of the circuit board stuff (well, OK, I lie - I used a grinder to take it off).... even this abuse did not affect the LED and they work like a charm.

They do look odd. Two more questions;

- I can only change these by removing the whole C Pillar cover?

- is there any thread on here that lists the best bulb for all lights in our cars?

Notice a parker not working last Sunday so replaced that. Then Thurs night noticed the light heater the rear window heater not working (muttered about that). Tonight I see one light above the rear licence plate is dead, and muttered even louder... I swear these things are dying to spite me. So I might just jump and replace all of them in one go.

Tony,

The kind-of oval insert in the C-pillar cover can be pried-out of the panel - just take care not to marr the plastic, or slip and scratch your panel.

There is enough slack in the loom to allow the lamp unit to be removed, and a connector detaches so you can take the lamp-unit out of the car. There is a single philips-screw which holds a plastic panel and a tin shield over the bulb.

The bulb-holder is a T10 wedge-base type - but the orientation of the lens to the bulb-holder is such that you NEED a bulb which will shine out sideways....... which the link posted by Maggie3.5 does!

There has been endless threads on bulbs (and also LED substitutes), but dunno if there is a single super-awesome thread with all suggested bulbs...... sadly, SEARCH may be your only answer here! "LED" will give some interesting results...... dunno how you can limit the results tho!
As an indication:
Climate Control lighting in 3rd Gens can be converted to LED - 2 diff sizes "neo-wedge"
LED Parker bulbs have been discussed (think mine have 9 of those SMD LEDs in each unit) - fittimng thru narrow hole is the issue here.
Various options for interior lights...... if you have "map lights" those same "Flank T10 W5W" ones work quite well.
Various locations use T5 wedge base: with LEDs available in several colours. eg: ashtray, some gearstick lights, ign key ring, manual air-con panels etc

Off the top of my Head, E-bay sellers I have used have been called "jpwarden2002" and "biolivingbeauty" and "solaluna".
I haven't gone completely LED, have done interior lamps, parkers in one-piece parras, climate control screen, interior lamps incl c-pillar, central and maps.

My posts are about 1/2 way down.

That thread needs to be stickied or something. Or at least my posts do.

Kudos to Gas-Hed! His posts have been super-helpful to me in the past. Esp the "puddle-lights" Mod which I have applied to all TJ's/KJ's in our family.

Gas_Hed - that's brilliant - thanks! And you too Phil (and Mike of course).
