Hi, our 1990 TP Magna has been diagnosed with a power steering fluid leak. A trusted mechanic gave us some stop leak-type stuff to put in. It seems to need topping up very regularly. Do these thick replacement fluids even work and do anything useful, or is there another fix we can try?

Cheers!

that stuff can stop small leaks

the top seal on the rack leaks thats a commom fault

but if you have to keep topping it up a lot

the rack should come out and be repaired or
have a reconditioned one fittted

If hes a trusted mechanic, He should of found the leak and told you where it was coming from. Red fluid dripping out from somewhere near your P/S components shouldnt be that hard to find.

Thanks for the advice. Yeah, I checked the fluid level today and the reservoir was empty, right to the bottom. Yesterday it was filled twice. Sounds like the rack needs replacing then.

Cheers!

Thanks, mate, I will check to see if that was looked at.

@magna buff: what would you estimate a recon steering rack would cost to be fitted?

Cheers!

just a guess
havent had to get one
thinking about $200 + fitting
but shop around for a good price

you might like to get a price from a wrecker

also you may need a wheel alignment

not to hard to DIY if you have the tools and car stands
