My personalised plates are ready for collection from the RTA (MM-98-TF on red plates).
The existing plates are just stock yellow ones, bolted on by two screws at the top edge near the centre.
Now... before I go pulling off the old ones and collecting the new: is there a better way to attach rego plates that I should consider and prepare for?

Did you get a slimline one? You could mount it higher to expose more of the bottom grill.

Yup, the front one is slimline. I think the existing mounting is already at the top of the recess, but I'll look into it, thanks.

I'm thinking of getting perspex rego plate covers (from Pexplate) to enhance the look (black frame and clear cover) rather than just the bare rego plate. Anyone got positive or negative feedback on how these look?

on the front bumper these perspex covers can look a bit funny if you have the number plate mounted straight onto the bumper as the cover needs to curve to the shape of the bumper which makes the cover stick out on the sides and not flush, it also means the cover fills up with water and suds everytime you wash it.
what i have is the clear perspex cover like you are talking about on the back plate and just a black plastic numberplate trim which goes around the edge of the plate which sits flush with the bumper

IMHO the plate covers make a 100% improvement.. especially the slimline ones. I put duct tape over the holes that arent being used on the back of the plate to stop excess dirt and moisture getting in, seems to work alright.

I bought some fairly cheap "Altrex" number plate frames/covers - a cheapish version in their range anyway.
Is just thin clear plastic over the plate and a fairly thin/flexible black frame that the clear clips/sits in - then the black frame clips over the edge of the plate.
My effective-but-messy improvement was to bed the clear sheet in black auto-silastic inside the black frame. Makes the whole thing a lot less dodgy, and helps keep dust and moisture out of the frame. Since it only clips onto the number plate at the edges, even MORE black silastic (just a dob here and there) helps keep it in-place....... it has survived folks giving it a light tap with a towbar etc (the whole thing is so flimsy it just bends, where the towbar would have cracked a more-expensive set-up).

Thanks for the help, guys.
Shayne, my TF Magna has a recess in the front bumper for the rego plate - it's not quite wide enough to fit the standard NSW plate width anyway, so there's a mounting point that's set forward to bring the sides of the plate to the front edge of the bumper. A cover/frame should look fine; I guess I'll find out about any water problems in due course!
Shamous, the duct tape idea is excellent.
Elwyn, nice tip - I'll go check out Altrex at the local K-Mart tonight :)
Speaking of Number Plates, on my TL the Front Plate screws directly into the Front Bar... Is this Right, or is there usually a Spacer of some sort between the Plate and Bumper BAr??

Or you could use the front plate mount off a 3rd gen Verada. This would make the plate sit straight not curved!!

That is how it came out of the factory. TW/KW came out with a mounting frame. See pics in my sig.

Did you get your Alltrex plate covers? What did they cost?

The K-Mart near me doesn't have any, but Auto 1 has a range around $36.95 per set. I quite like a model with a carbon fibre look. Unfortunately Alltrex have used white weather tape instead of black around the edges, which is a bad colour choice - I might just use black texta to hide the edges better.
Update: I got the Alltrex Sport model in "red carbon fibre". It suits my red rego plates and Frontier Green paint with Sable Black grille. I used texta to tone down the white weather tape, although it turns out to be very resistant to absorbing anything, including texta ink - so even though it's permanent ink, a lot of it rubs off again.
Here's the front one:
