Hi guys, I have a few rust spots and cracking/peeling clear coat on the back doors and left rear quarter panel that I'm looking at getting repaired.

I've already redone some of the clear coat on one of the doors (peeling) and over the rust spots just with a spray can which turned our ok but I'm looking at getting some paint mixed so I can redo the rust spots, or taking it to a professional, just wondering if anyone has any idea's what I'd be looking at to get these fixed and if I should attempt it myself, keeping in mind I'd be doing it in the open air.

hi mate ,
the first three pics will be the hard one for ya if you do not know what you are doing as you will have to blend it into the original pait and being metalic in colour its a 3 layer process of primer ,basecoat and clear which can build up on you pretty quick with out the right equiptment the rust on the other hand is/does not look that bad in the pics just looks like surface rust correct me if im wrong, which all you do befor you prime it is give it a light sand which you will have to do any way before you start painting and rub some rust guard into it.

The last pic if its only the clear cracking/peeling just lightly sand it with a 1200 grit sanding disc and make sure you dont go through to the metalic base coat and reclear and blend it in to the original clear.
So long story short if you do not feel confident doing this take it to a profesional which sould not cost to much anyway.

good luck with it all hope it all works out for ya;)

hey, thanks for the advice.. Yes it's just surface rust.. I've already done the clear coat on one door so I'm not too worried about redoing the cracked clearcoat that was pretty easy.. It looks as though the whole rear pass side has been repainted as (hard to explain) but the finish isn't as good as the rest of the car and I can see where some dents have been taken out and there's a strand of eyelash or similar hair stuck in the paint lol, also it's the only area of the entire car that is cracking.

I'll give it a go, when you get paint mixed in aerosol cans is it acrylic or 2pack? or do you have the option?

The plan is to get some fine sand paper and sand back the rust to metal, rust inhibit if needed, prime, sand, base, sand, clear, sand, buff, polish..

im pretty sure you can get both 2 pac and acrylic in a can.....

The plan you got sounds pretty spot on just one thing leave out the sanding after base coat it is not needed as the base should lay flat once it has dryed if not dont worry to much as once the clear is on and buffed up you wont even be able to tell. then go ahead as you planed and you will be right.

I reckon I'll give it a go myself, I'm wanting to colour match all the trims aswell (door trims, side skirts, door strips and mirrors (one is peeling badly anyway) and maybe the door handles, just not sure about painting over chrome?

paint over chrome? DON'T!!!!!!! Won't work unless you sandblast the chrome off, prime, fill, undercoat, etc

That's what I thought lol..

I just went to the local smash repairer, they want around $800 per side..
They also won't mix paints for me so looks like I'll be getting some touch up paint from mits and be done with it..
Unless Repco or Supercheap can mix paints.

go to your local paint supplier that deals with automotive paint and if he does not mix it he will point you in the right direction to some one that will, plus they will stock all of the other things that you need cups, clear, primer ,filler ect. if that fails then yes try autobarn if in your area as they mix paint to your coulor code which will be located under your bonett on the comp plate

Sucks to live in the country, the place I went to advertises as supplying automotive paint lol..
They weren't willing to just repaint and blend, they said they'd need to strip the whole door and quarter panel back to metal due to the previous repair and not knowing what type of paint was used, fair enough but annoying to me lol.

I'll make a trip to Wodonga during the week, there's an automotive paint specialist there..

Ha! Just had an idea!
I'm wanting to save up and get a VRX body kit including flares.. In which case I don't need to be overly concerned with matching paint to fix the rust in pic 1 and 2 as wheel flares will cover them up..

in that case if you just touched it up with a solid instead of a metalic paint for it will eventualy be covered by the flares, atleast the rust problem wont get any worse.

they are identical to a mob we have driving around my area called chips away they use a portable airbrush to do the touchup. a few of my mates have used them and rate there work, and the best bit is they come to you.but at the end of the day that depends on how much you wish to spend to fix the issue.

Looks like I will have to hold off on any mods for a while.
The wife had a big freaking sook last night about me spending money on my car, apparently it's a waste and I don't need to spend anymore money, when will it stop etc etc..

It will stop when she no longer needs to buy a new handbag every month and stops wanting takeaway 2 - 3 times a week!

IMO, I go to work, I want something to show for it ! and I should be able to spend some money on myself!
Most women just don't understand!
