Howdy All,
I as wondering if anyone had some specs or personal experience with the "10 Speaker" Stereo in my VR-X.
I'm wondering
(a) How many speakers and how much power each 'll need (shopping for a head unit upgrade before stereo/amps/subs upgrade)
(b) Is it running a standard 3rd gen magna harness (front+rear) and just hooks up multiple speakers off each output, or is it something custom?
(c) Does it have crossovers or such for the tweeters etc, or is it some head unit magic with custom harness as above.
Hoping to get some idea before tearing it apart! Thanks. :)

Alrighty Trent, its not really 10 speakers in your car
They class two way sopeakers as 2 speakers for some reason, I can give you a run down on thursday night if you want?
You'll find that each speaker is like 4 or 6 watts rms, getting a new h/u is fine
You'll notice and difference in the sound quality too
As for the splits up front, the tweeter contects to the woofer
Need any help mate just let us know :)

hey mr_roberto.. is it worth upgrading the tweeters? r they as crap as the other speakers? i bought a VRX last month and the rear speakers were rated 40W as opposed to my other rear speakers which were 400W.. just thinking if i should change the tweeters too..
@lathiat: don't mean to hijack..sorry - thought u could use the info too though..

Well theres no point upgrading the speakers if your gonna keep the standard deck
The stock speakers are pretty good for what they are
It just depends on what you want out of the system

I think I might have a busted speaker or two gotta test/check them all.. thx for the info Mr_Roberto.. which speakers are in the dash and door? (like, 2-way, woofer, or?)

Mine didnt come with any in the dash
I replaced mine with a set of Eclipse 6 1/2" splits
Also a good idea to replace the plastic baffles with ones made from MDF, theres a template running around the forums
Will help when it comes to upgrading speakers as some are too deep and hit the window
VR-X has 6" Midbass in the Doors, 4" Midrange in Dash, Tweeters in Door Pods in the front, and 2-Way 6x9"s in the rear. There's no crossovers as such I'm aware of, more capacitors to cut certain frequencies from certain speakers for basically the same effect, just with no adjustability.
They're good for about 20w RMS a channel, I wouldn't be amping them greatly though, could probably benefit from a low power amp, say 30x4w rms if you wanted to high pass them to run a sub. It does run down to the standard Magna loom, so you can use loom adapters if you want.

Changing anything always comes down to what you want in quality and how much you want to spend. You can go and spend $80 on a pair of front speakers which is not much better than the standard "premium" system that comes with the car and best to leave it as it is.
Here is an example of what can be done for $1800 (excluding head unit) and apologies if it seems like I am hijacking the thread.
I spent a bit more cash and put in a set of VIBE Black Air 6" splits in the front to replace the standards. They have a x-over which was mounted in the door trim. They retail for $599 a pair. They deliver 120 RMS and peak at 360watts. The other good news is they fit where the standard splits go.
The rear parcel shelf I put in a set of Soundstream 6x9's. Their RMS is 150 and peak power at 300 watts. Approx $300 4 years ago (transferred from my old Laser).
I run these through a 4 channel 1400w VIBE BLACK BOX Space4 amp. It runs 110w RMS per channel at 4 ohms. This amp retails for $899. Model number STEREO04-V1
Due to always using my boot and a nagging wife, I dont have a subwoofer. If I do later on, I will use a mono amp and a 12" sub as I listen to alot of heavy rock and need something a bit punchy.
I just use an Alpine head unit out of my old laser that is still good for what I need. The retail on that was $1199.
Sound and quality is really good and has good bass.

djnewy, have you considered the Black Death 6x9s?

djnewy, have you considered the Black Death 6x9s?
Have I ever! The down side was they dont fit into the car as standard because of the square shape and magnet size my supplier told me. I have only ever seen one pair installed in a custom commodore that was being shown off at Sexpo in Sydney last year. The whole rear parcel shelf was custom fibreglass which most of the car was the same.
Have you seen any black deaths installed in a Magna? I would love to see photos.
The bass that these things throw out looks amazing on paper and a good investment at $500 a set (normal retail).
I will keep dreaming though.

Hey you deal with Frankie by the sound of it. If I'm right he can more than likely get that working for you.

Give Andrew a call: http://www.shoppingsecure.com.au/index.php?_a=viewProd&productId=43
See if he can help you with it. If he can get it fitted I can work you out a good price on the hardware because that would be something I would love to post up in other forums and on my site!

If he cant do the custom job for you I'll find someone else but even if he hasn't done it before hopefully he would be keen to have a crack at it!

TW VRX has rear door speakers mate.
Hey mate,
I'm pretty sure no 3rd gens came out with rear door speakers from factory. Only in the parcel shelf.
Would be interested to see a pic of it.

TW VRX has rear door speakers mate.
hey mate i have also never seen a 3rd gen with rear door speakers not even on a diamante unless its custom.loud1 has fitted rear door speakers
TW VRX has rear door speakers mate.
Since when...?
I deem this damn near impossible considering I've been in a few TW's and never noticed rear door speakers, and it has the same 10 speaker stereo my TL VRX has, which doesn't have rear door speakers.

Apologies to everyone and well spotted. I was thinking of my laser although I did run outside and checked the rear door for peace of mind!
I edited my post to ensure its accuracy and got the actual specs on the system to make sure there were no other incorrect guesses.

hey lathiat,
I was in the same situation (same speaker set up) I was originally going to upgrade it all, but i ended up just getting a head unit (from my old car) and installing a sub connected to an amp (with the help of Lugo). After doing that i decided that was pretty bloody good for stock speakers. I suggest you try this first before you go and spend a lot of money.
My head unit is pretty decent (was about $500 4 years ago).
Unless you have it really really loud, there is no distortion, and when distortion finally kicks in, its at a volume that's too loud to for continuous listening (ie, you will go deaf after listening to it that loud for 20 mins), so at this stage i don't see the need for an upgrade.

Thanks for the tip.. I'm fairly sure I have a broken speaker or two so I'll probably need to do something anyway.. see how we go.
But the stock sound system does sound pretty good... at any rate this project is on hold for the end of the year when I have some $$$ :P
