My magna is off the road getting some work for rego at the momnet and has always started on the choke and determined in a few seconds whether to stay on or off but today when I started it I think the revs actually went up when the choke disengaged. I think it started at 1400 rpm, then after a few minutes levelled off at 1900, which after winding the idle screw and mixture down brought it down to 1100/1200 rpm. It was not surging at all. I did degrease the motor 2 weeks ago but let it idle with the bonnet down to dry (maybe not long enough) and also the fuel tank was almost dry and silly me put 4.5 L of premium in and 700 ml of metho in case there was moisture in the tank as it went from a paddock in winter to my garage. The temp outside when I started the car was about 30 degrees and the problem persisted for 30 min and I haven't after restarting and having the same prob 3 times here I turn to the experts. Thankyou for reading this and I hope you can help !!!

I looked in the book
it may be is a sticky cable
a faulty engine management module
a faulty stepper motor
a faulty TPS sender that is kepping the butterfly open
or a fault in the device that idles up the motor for the airconditioner

Ok, well my battery is dicky so I didn't have a chance to play with it today. I've cleaned all the electrical connectors to my air flow meter, TPS I think ? (opposing side to throttle cable/butterfly) and dizzy cause they were looking a bit green. I have left the batt disconnected overnight to hopefully reset engine management. the last time it was started was two weeks ago and it was perfect, prior to that it has never missed a beat. hopefully it was a connection I corroded by degreasing the motor. Cberry30 it started like it was on the choke, and then about 2 minutes later I thought hang on that is idling miles too high a tad under 2000. I'll let everyone know how I go tomorrow when I restart it. I'm wondering if because the valve stem seals are so worn that the oil breather has clogged one of those things up on the throttle body, degreasing it has corroded something causing engine management to have a hissy fit or the ratio of 1 part metho to 5 parts fuel is doing it as I was concerned the may have been condensation in the tank (metho absorbs water molecules) and that is making it rev harder. thankyou for taking the time to help me guys It's going to take another 6 weeks to save to get it back on the road without this happening to me :( and it was out of the blue no warning.

Ok, I've had time and a battery to check it out. when the engine is first started it behaves, idles correctly. Turn the Air conditioning on it goes up a little bit, still correct but turn the air con off, or it cycles off the revs go to 1800 it's like when it jacks the revs up for the air con that's it what ever it is keeps it there, and then when theair con kicks back in or is turned back on the revs go back to about 1100 what would this be caused by ? is it the idle stepper motor ???

Also when I disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and come back to it, and restart the engine Idle speed is perfect and the cycle begins again :(

how long do you idle it after a reset? give it at least 10 minutes, then drive for 10 minutes

Ok I've done that, but as soon as I turn my Air conditioner on the idle goes into a high frenzy and stays there until the battery has been disconnected for a few minutes

I'm sure there is a specific diagnostic ladder to go down to solve this. I would start by changing the ISC. Its 2 x 8mm bolts holding it in, no more then 15 minutes to replace with air intake off. Get one off a 3rd gen if you can so you at least know its not 18 years old...
If it still happens, Maybe change the throttle body with a clean one. TPS is also a possiblity but I'd start with the ISC. Common problem on these cars.

OK Update. Fuel Drained 1/2 tank of shell premium unleaded. Brand New 440 CCA Battery, new 100 Amp alt fuse (Engine bay box as the old one was looking greenish) Total of 20 km's of driving Granny style, a/c on/off. Auto O/D off hit rev limiter 1, 2 put back in Drive O/D on and drove it how I normally would for the last 10 K's switching air con on and off. Doesn't seem to be missing a beat but I honestly think the biggest thing upsetting it was voltage from shitty battery???

Ok, if it comes back where is the ISC and is it worth going second hand cause they are like 170 bucks aren't they ? or is that the TPS I am thinking of ?

LOL just saw tuff TR's response SWEET but mine is a 2.6L so will a 3.0L/3.5L 3rd Gen be compatable ?

yeah Any ISC will work fine.
2.6/3L or 3/3.5L 3rd gen one, Same same.
