So, i've always preferred to drive around with my headlights on. But my only concern is i always forget to turn them on and i usually forget to turn them off.

I was curious, has anyone set up some form of relay/switch, that when the headlights are turned on, they turn off when you turn the ignition off, but still leave the stock headlight switch on. But also, if i decided to turn the headlights on and then off again that they turn back on so if i have the need to i can have the headlights on without the ignition on.

I got this idea as i know my fathers Landcruiser does it, and im sure many other cars do it. From memory, Telstra staff cars have they're headlights wired in the same fashion.

Ideas?

there are modules you can get from jaycar, like in the ve's, that turn the lights off when the ignition is off. not sure how to wire it up, maybe speak to paul or mal

i would, find the wire that activates the headlight relays, and then tap that into acc wire.
your lights will turn on when you turn the key to acc, and ON/Start, then turn off again when you turn the key to lock

As Lowrider said, Change the trigger wire to the relay.

Wouldnt doing it this way stop me from being able to turn it on when there arent any keys in the ignition?

Yeah you'd need another relay or something or other for that, why do you want to do this anyway? why do you need your headlights on when your NOT in the car?

Haha, you never know man. I also go camping a lot, so it can come in very handy then. I might try this idea though if i cant find another way around.

Thanks for the ideas!

no, tap into the wire, dont sever it. if you get some current going back into the system, add a diode, thats how we wired up dads reverse lights, (spot lights) on his patrol. the current was travelling up into the dash and lighting it up, i diode fixed that.

You guys do realise that the headlights do turn off when you remove the keys. Its the parkers that stay on until you turn off at the switch. You'll need to tap the parkers trigger into the same source as the headlight trigger. Also, you'll need a second relay with 6 pins (double pole double pin) which can switch between two sources of power which then means you need a separate switch somewhere in the cabin to switch it on/off when you do not have the keys in the ignition.

Sure about this? Is this when you REMOVE the keys from the ignition or have the ignition turned off with the keys in?
As i noticed today when i parked to pick up a mate, left the keys in the ignition, ignition off and the keys in the ignition and the headlights where still on....

As I said, the headlight turns off when the key is removed, however the parkers will still be on unless it is switched off at the stalk. This was also the case with my old KS Verada.

Vlad, i think it may be a verada thing only, my cars headlights stay on when i remove the key, only an audio reminder to tell you they have been left on

Mate, you are thinking of your old KS as the third gen do not do this

The BEM will allow you to do a timed run of the head lights, once ignition has been turned off, flash headlights and they will stay on a short time
