View Full Version : Mivec or 3.5 conversion?

Ive owned my 3.0 TE manual wagon for 8 years now and shes clocked up 335000km. IT still goes as good as the day I bought it but the thought of an engine upgrade may soon be a reality. I can source a 3l mivec engine 220,000km with computer for around $400nz which is very tempting but after hours of research on this site it looks like this may be more labour intensive compared to a straight 3.5 swap using my original ecu. Having a high revving mivec manual conversion would be awesome to drive do you think it would be worth all the exta work and hassle or would the 3.5 perform nearly as good? Can anyone tell me what problems I would encounter with eather conversion?. Other mods I have done include KN panel ,CAI and VRX muffler with no cat at all {not fitted to nz cars}

you can pick up a near ned shprt 3.5L for less than 700 if your lucky,
frsh gearbox and youd be looking at 1500, and its a direct bolt in.
Mivec = a fair bit more f'ing around, and i dont think it would be that much better tbh
Go for the 3.5 conversion.
Being a wagon I think the extra torque from the added displacement will be good for tugging the extra weight of the wagon around, and also any large loads you may carry in the back.
Given the 3.0 might have more power and rev easier, the 3.5 will give more torque and is very easy to fit.
If you don't get a 3.5 gearbox with a 3.5 motor, take a look at my ride thread as I did the conversion between the 3.0 and the 3.5 and I put a few things down in my thread that you will need to look out for.

The 3L MIVEC (at different RPM I would assume) Actually puts out more torque AND power then a 3.5L
What the... where does it say that? :-o

look it up, 30M diamante. I would be extremely interested in trying this conversion out, but there is no information out there, with sources. Sure, certain people can say certain things can fit on to certain blocks, etc... but until there is solid evidence of this information being true, I don't see myself doing a Mivec conversion without some serious money behind me. What worries me is recoding the keys after you swap the ECU's and rest of the crap over. What happens then!?

Its called getting a front cut lol
Its a bolt in no issues there. Massive 2 piece heads on it though, will be a tight fit in that engine bay.
Tis a conversion thats been done before.

Why not go a rebuild? There were some cheap 3L crate motors floating around from the Mit Clearnance Centre a while ago. The 3L has loads of oversized slugs etc available from the states. Get some higher compression pistons and you'll make as much torque as a 3.5L and you can have a *new* motor to boot. Remember going mivec etc will cost you a lot more than your car's probably worth.

Apparently there are halfcuts going around in NSW for $1600? If it's true that's what I'd be doing.
Not sure what the Eclipse guys can do to there NA 3L's but the 3000GT NA 3L's dont really go anywhere even with TONS of modifications. One Guy in the US is running something like 13.5:1 compression, massive cams, tuned etc etc and making 244HP at the front wheels, while still not a bad effort a standard 3.5L untouched puts out 200HP at the wheels.
I agree if he can find a crate motor that'd be perfect, then its basically a brand new car again, if he's after a weekend job, put a 3.5L in, if hes after a challenge, put the MIVEC in.
Alot of talk about these MIVEC half cuts but all I hear is talk-y and no do-y!

lulz, as I said, lots of talk, no actual evidence. Unless there was a thread on here (which I havent been able to find yet) that lists what the person has done to fit the thing in, i seriously doubt it is worth ****ing around for a few days and pulling hairs by the handful in order to get the mivec engine in.
The "safe bet" would be just to lightly work the 3.5 in order to get decent power. Although the Mivec would be great, and somebody has put it in their magna before, there is no documentation or support *anywhere* to aid a person doing the mod.
I was wondering if maybe Life (Dean), would do the mod, seeing as he obviously has the knowledge and experience to install the halfcut. C'mon Dean, don't buy that 32 gig iPhone, and just buy a 30M halfcut? I'll help ya out...

Name me the other engine conversions Dean has had?
In what way are you doubting the motor doesnt bolt in? I'm curious.
If you buy a halfcut there is no guesswork, thats the beauty, even if something IS different, you transfer it from the halfcut. :)

Haha every time I talk to him about the Mivec motor, he says the heads bolt onto 6g74's, straight fit, no issues at all. Yet, I have read on some other Mitsu engine'd forums that the heads need modifying to fit 74's, flywheel needs modification to fit manual transmission because the Mivec one is supposedly "stronger" and one other thing that has flown out of my mind (when I remember, I'll bring it back up).
He seems to have the information and the aura of experience, when there isn't very much out there... Sorry Dean, not trying to give you shit, but just concerned about information given when there are no sources to back the info up on.
I don't really doubt the motor bolting in, I doubt everything else. What happens with the keys and immobiliser? How about getting keys reprogrammed to suit a diamante immobiliser unit? Are there any modifications needed for the loom to fit in the Magna from the Diamante(less doubt on this)? Modifications to fit the cluster in? Speedo sensor? It goes on and on.
I wish everything was wikified, like with the R31 Skyline Forum. Its so simple to find all the already done mods for their cars, with explanations and modifications needed to fit.

I can dig up a thread on a the 3si forums where a member has put the MIVEC heads onto a 2nd gen orientated (i.e. my motor) 6G74, then twin turboed it :|
Well you could always run an aftermarket ECU. The adaptronic ECU I run is capable of running MIVEC motors.
Anyway, as much as Dean KNOWS about this "conversion" he's (nor have pretty much everyone else) never touched one, seen one, or worked on one (sorry dean:P)
Those reasons are valid but with a workshop manual (Id be hunting one of those down FIRST) you should be able to splice things together.
Like you said, I'm positive everything will bolt up and in, but the electronics will be the hard part

If I was able to get my hands on a MIVEC half cut I would convert bonnie's TF way before a put a supercharger on it.
Well, there are a lot of variations but this is the highest I could find without snails hangin off of it
199kW
301Nm
More power but less pulling power than a 3.5 :-o
