View Full Version : To box or not to box
Howdy all,
I've recently put an amp/sub type of arangement into the boot of my TE manga and have noticed that when my boot is full it sounds very much more basey..
Does anyone recomend building a box to put this in, or is that just a stupid idea...
They are designed to go in small cars, ie: not a magna.. I had it in a Commodore previous to now and it didnt have a great impact on the system then either.
It is the older model but the same idea as this one..

I also have a Pioneer MP3 head unit and a set of Pioneer 6x9's that I put in this weekend just gone..
Thanks guys..

that combo package looks rather odd, and as you were saying it sounds more basey because my theory is that there is items closer to bounces the sound waves off :P, so yeh building a custom box may give your car more of a rumble, a weird idiotic work mate of mine screwed in a subwoofer reversed into the box ( front facing into the box) actually worked quite decently for shakes, its a shame the sound quality was muffled and the appearance on it is *** ug...but considering he has a ****ty deck mixed with ****ty speakers, theres not much a good quality sounding sub could do for him, so he was in it for the shakes :P
Are you saying your subwoofer is currently not in an enclosure? Most subwoofers are designed to run in an enclosure. What type of sub do you have?

Inverting the sub so it's out of the box increases the effective box volume, which often gives deeper bass (in sealed boxes). Doing this on a ported/bandpass box though would put the tuning right out and give a farty sound.

man everytime i post on here i sound like an illiterate dickhead :/...might start tidying up my posts.

Speakers run AC dude, in that the cone travels both ways and gives off sound from both sides. It won't effect the sound if the subwoofer faces in or out because the sound wave (peak to peak) is too long to be effected.
Its an integrated Amp and Sub, Its all in one unit, I think they are designed to fit under the seats in a Ute or the like..
Its not a single cone speaker type of Sub that you would immedietly think of..
If you want I'll take a photo of it when I get some day light..

fhrx its like an all-in-one-package, the sub is already enclosed in a metal casing along with the amp, i think, someone clarify that for me.
Oh okay, so it's like a self-powered enclosure like edge was saying yeah?
Maybe building another enclosure is the answer but you'll need to get hold of the T/S specs of the driver itself before you go constructing another enclosure. :)
yeah thats the type of thing..
What do you mean by the T/S Specs?
applogies for my ingorance..
Nah you're right champ, if none of us asked question we'd never learn anything hey. :D
T/S specs is short for Theile / Small parameters.
The work of Neville Theile and Richard Small is considered to have the most impact on the loudspeaker design field. They discovered a method that could predict the frequency response performance and other characteristics of a loudspeaker system based on its physical and electrical parameters.
In other words, you can design the best volume enclosure for your subwoofer once you know these figures. :) They usually come with the sub as part of the instructions.
Cheers buddy,
I've always wanted to get more into that sort of stuff but never had the finances to purchase the decent enough equipment to do it..
I'll have to dig out the instuctions and see if it says anything in that, from memory all it says it mount it and plug it in.
Maybe trial and error will be the way to go.
Hey we all start somewhere. I won't even admit to owning my first system! Haha. Should have seen it... :D:D
Dito, this would now be say my fourth head unit in 3 different cars. Each have had a splatering of effort on them speaker wise, nothing really to write home about..
What I think was my best sounding thus far was in my 1982 Sigma, It was a cheap, and I mean under $200 head unit, old pioneer speakers and a crappy amp/sub combo but It did pretty well in the confindes of the small car.
Alright, I admit it; I started with Alpine 6x9's!
hey, this may seem like a stupid question, but do u, fhrx/(marty) get around to just about every car forum in australia? :D
or are there like, multiple fhrx employees that all sit in front of computers? coz i think browsing around on forums, and answering everyone's questions takes some time!
u're at fastfours,hot4s,CAA and here now (they're my most visited forums). anywayz, top end stuff fhrx sells is a liiiiittle too outta reach for me as yet...
i need splits
I'm a member on 35 Aussie forums I think and moderate 7.
It's usually customers that mention something that needs answering on a forum. When I arrive I usually just join up. It does take a long time yes. Especially when you get over 500 correspondance a day. :)
sounds a bit crap,I would smash it up,buy another cheap sub cone ,connect existing amp and build a new box with mdf voila!! It will probably sound better and its good fun.
