Hi Guys
When were airbag's compulsory in vechiles - in Aust? I have a magna 99 (DEC) TH sports that does not has drivers driver or PS AB fitted. Is this normal?
Reason I ask I am trting to sell shortly and I had a guy ask about it. I have had the car since 2001 bought from a dealer and have not really thought about it.

Air bags are not compulsary as far as I'm aware, car makers simply put them in to raise the safety rating of the cars.
EDIT: however it is illegal to remove an airbag from a car that had them fitted standard from the factory.

yea this is interesting, what car was this for?
i wonder if they disable the airbags or fit a different wheel?
airbags didnt become compulsory, but they became a standard feature on all new cars.
even the cheapest car in australia the proton s16 has a drivers airbag.

this was for a ford laser kn, at the time i was not a fan of airbags having seen one go off accidentally... damn near killed the guy repairing the car, knocked him out good and proper
also if the system has a fault then it shuts down.... which could prove fatal in an accident.... so many vehicles are being driven around with airbag lights blazing away on the instrument cluster... ive also had knobs ask me to disable their faulty system so it looks like its working when they sell their car... and yes i tell themselves
another point of note.... airbags can mean the difference between a car being repaired and written off ($$$)
an airbaged car also has different seat belts to a bagless one

In many states in the USA it is law that bags have to be disabled if the drivers seat is forward of a certain position as they can kill just as easilly as they can save.
When the bag goes off they tend to break necks of people if they sit too far foward as many people do
They say they were invented to protect the rich spooners in their convertable mercs cruising around the us in the rich areas so they could be good and still be "safe" without seat belts on.
As for standard fitment, I think the TJ was the first to come with a drivers as standard across the range
