hey guys

Well got a bit of a problem.....My boot light will only work when the boot is closed  but i wanted to replace that boot light with a cold cathode.

Would it be possible to wire it all up to a switch so i could turn it on and off??

thanks guys

Yes it would be easy to wire it up to a switch but as for your boot light only working while its closed... bizzar... Can't help you there...

must be a switch or something, but i don't htink its a mechanical switch for the bootlight. anyway, i just htink its funny as how it turns on when the boot's closed :bowrofl:

btw, i want ur chromed boot garnish

How do you want it to work? Are you gonna leave the original light in there? Do you want the Cathode to come on when the boot is opened, but have a master switch that turns it on and off?

There are heaps of "sparky" type guys here who can help you, but it sounds to me like you're entering relay country.

hey

Yeh i would love the Cathode to come on when the boot is opened, but have a master switch that turns it on and off

that would be great

eek: Hands off my chromed boot garnish :uzi:

Of the two wires in the bootlight plug, one is constant 12V, and the other switched ground (when you open/close the boot). Hook up the +/- up to respective terminals on the CCFL transformer and it should turn on when boot's open and vice versa. Simply then splice a wire that connects ground to the - wire, and place a switch on this wire (probably need to extend wire into the cabin.

what if his bootlight turns on when the boot's closed and off when the boot's open?

Mechanical switch is probably stuck/dirty. Remove the boot lid interior trim (if you have it), there will be a small tab which swivels when you turn the boot keylock. It presses against a spring electric contact. Try cleaning both the tab and the contact with some nailpolish remover. My light used to either stay on when the boot was closed, or not come on when boot was open. Cleaned it and haven't had a problem since.

not sure about your problem with the light coming on when the boots closed, but assuming u get that fixed heres a diagram of how you could wire it up..
all you will need is a 3 way switch and wire to connect it all

with your 3 way toggle switch, connect one side to earth somewhere (eg. car body) and the other side connected to the boot switch (either to the actual switch or just take some of the outside off the wire and just tap into it) then connect the negative from the cold cathode light to the middle pin of the toggle switch.. and the positive of the cold cathode light to a positive wire..

thats it! thats all the work u have to do, now i will just explain exactly how it works so u know for yourself

its pretty simple, if u switch the toggle switch to side A (refer to pic) then it connects the negative from the cold cathode light to the boot switch, therefore if the boot opens it connects the negative to ground and your cold cathode light comes on (the cold cathode light is already connected to positive)

if you switch the toggle swith to the middle (which i reffered to as B in the pic) it doesnt connect the negative from the cold cathode light to either source of ground, therefore the light doesnt come on at all..

if u switch the toggle switch to side C (refer to pic) it connects the negative from the cold cathode light to the ground, which will make the cold cathode light come on, as it will have neagive from the switch and positive which is connected all the time..

To have the cold cathode light come on when the boot opens, switch it to A.. to have it on permanently switch it to C.. if you want it to be off and NOT come on when you open the boot, switch it to the middle, B..

Hope This helped, i probably made it sound a lot harder than it is.. although u shouldnt have too much trouble..
this post ended up longer than i thought
and if you cant work out whats going on with your light, u could always put in another one of those pin switchs like they use for bonnet protection with alarms, same sort of thing used for your door lights.. but thats more of a last resort..

was gonna say if you need a hand give me a yell, but then looked and saw your from queensland  lucky bugger.. just give me a yell on msn/icq if i didnt make sence
