Just wondering if it is possible to remove the battery cover so a bigger battery will fit in the engine bay? (ie A longer battery)

Sure is mate :P,
Pretty much the top just pulls straight off,(just got those push plugs in them) and remove the battery and then the buttom part is a plastic surrounding.... but and this is a big BUT, you need to install some kind of bottom plating, because there will be no base left, unless you Cut the standard plastic surounding so its just the base..
:P and that should do it mate, Make sure your batteries got a mount so its legal

The other thing im a little concerned about is the terminals then touching the bonnet if the cover is not on...

Does anybody know the maximum size a battery can be to fit into the battery holder?? Ive measured with a ruler and seems like 10" (length) might fit, although it would be very tight... But dont want to buy a battery that is slightly too big or else I might as well have just gotten a much bigger battery anyway...

Im sure you can buy or manufacter some rubber caps to cover the terminals, try clark rubber. Or go down to your local 'battery world' and they will be able to help out with that and possibly be able to create or show you battery holders and such.

As long as the battery terminals remain on the same side (closest to the firewall) then I cant see it being a problem
Main thing you'll need to look at is the height of the battery, if it roughly the same height as the stock battery then you should be sweet
If still worried you can just grab some new terminals that come with plastic covers on them

Ahhh kk thanks guys... I think the batttery may be a bit taller than the stock battery. I have found however that I can buy 'side post terminals' so the posts can go on the side of the battery rather than on the top, which should leave a little room. I might go see if I can get a bit of rubber that can cover the top bolt thing (Its a screw type terminal rather than a normal battery terminal..)
Will take my battery out hopefully tommorrow and see if its really worth all the trouble to fit a larger battery. I might even be able to somehow cut the plastic so the battery holder lid can still function partially...

Thinking now that I might stick a battery in the boot (Optima)... Just wondering how much stress the extra battery would put on the alternator?

Currently have a newish 550cca battery under the hood but now needing a bigger battery for the audio system. So why waste the 550cca? It seems like a better idea to me would be to leave the engine with this batt and then stick the new one in the boot for my audio. Ive been told this puts the alternator under higher stress levels, but I cant understand how this would be any more stressful than having a huge single battery in the engine bay that it has to charge?
