yes you can replace them. is more trouble than itsworth. the hole isnt big enough to accomodate anything other than a four inch speaker. and most of these still need the hole deepening. if yo do a searchj you should find a few hundred threads on the topic. the usual recommendation from memory is go buy some verada door pods:P

Yep - agree with Stormie. The Dash Speakers are only about 4" size - genuine Mitsi spares are about $36- each from memory, and look uninspiring.

I never found an after-market 4" speaker that was as shallow as the originals - so you have to remove a layer of plastic in the base of the speaker hole with the implement of your choice. Up there under the windscreen there is not much room to manouvre, let me tell you. I tried hacksaw blade, as well as using a soldering iron to "melt out" the plastic. I got there in the end but it was a frustrating process.

Lots of after-market 4" speakers have 4 tin mounting lugs, but are made so these are easily removeable - you can only use two lugs. Think I got 2-way speakers - probably Pioneer - to put in my niece's TR. Just double-check the depth of what you buy and get the shallowest you can find. Removing the plastic "base" of the speaker hole is necessary, but you still don't get heaps of room under that.

Oh, and be careful you don't cut/melt anything beside the useless plastic base of the speaker hole!! After the hassle, the sound from after-market 4" isn't great (but much better than shagged originals). Stormie is spot-on in every respect -door pods might be best option.

Agreed again, I wouldn't even bother messing with the dash speakers. You may not know it but your doors already have holes in them to accommodate a nice set of 6"-6.5" coaxials or splits. You can either get yourself a pair of verada door pods or do what I did and just cut a circle in your existing lining.

the pockets in the doors are easily removed. once you have the doorskin off they have four screws. i think i remember people keeping the pockets and switch passengers for drivers side to that they didnt foul the speaker. id have to have a search to try to find if it was actually done or just floated as an idea.
tweeters in the dash should be quite easy. however need to remember that the sound pitch a tweeter deals with is highly directional. is best to have them pointed toward the centre of the car. as opposed to say a sub that you can get more or less the same effect wherever you point it.

yeah I'd wedged a flat head screw driver in a pocket at the wreckers and pried it off a bit to find out lol

It took quite a while to get the plastic out the 4in holes, first with a bent hacksaw blade, then just with 2 hands and a stanley knife. Now i have cheap 4"s in dash, 6"s in doors, and amps running 6by9s in parcel shelf, 2 12" subs and a 15" sub in the boot. I probably dont need the 4" ones at all except i think only about half of my speakers are still working, i know the drivers door one is almost gone =(

in my old 2nd gen wagon i replaced the crappy front speakers for tweeters, and had 6x9" mids in the back, set the sound mostly to the back, but it sounded pretty decent, centered even- well for the driver, the rear passengers got deaf lol
