if the cap is in good conditon
and the fans working

the temp guage should be in the middle range

if not flush the radiator and add new coolant
if still not satisfied check the thermostat is opening

you take the thermostat out and put it
in boiling water it should open quickly

Ok thanks ill try that..........but why doesnt the car overheat when I turn on the heating and leave it on..is there a valve that releases the pressure?

Nah i think when you turn the heater on, more water from the heater core enters and circulates with the rest of the system.. that could be whats causing it to lower temp.
I'd check that there is no loss of water or visible leaks, then yeah,a good flush and refill with quality coolant and water never hurts then check thermostat.

maybe get a rad shop to check that you dont have a blown head gasket. is it using water

I've got a new thermostat and still only sits a quarter of the way and stays like that, I'm guessing its an electrical resistance fault since it seem to operate the same every day.
