Hey all
Ok I'm trying to track done a fault with the antenna on my TL. The antenna just stays down regardless of what the stereo is doing. I've checked the 3 wire connector with a multi meter I get 12V across trigger wire -> ground wire but nothing across power wire->Ground wire.
I've checked all the fuses all ok, where else should I be looking for the fault?

Before this happened the Antenna wasn't working properly, it wouldn't get to its normal height and made a fairly awful clunking noise when it moved up and down, so I'm not entirely ruling it out as also at fault. I was planning on replacing it anyway.

Are there any connectors under the floor carpet that could have been knocked loose? Is there anything else that runs off the same power wire that will help me located the fault?

Sounds like the actual motor that drives it.....someone may have forced the aerial up or down and done some damage. I'd try a replacement from a wrecker. I changed my electric one for a plain jane pull up ... $20 or so.

Thats what I thought originally but getting 0V across the wiring connector confused me. Although I don't have a lot of faith in multi meter readings either so I may just have to look at replacing it and seeing what happens.

I can imagine trying to find a fault in the wiring and replacing the loom will be a pain in the arse.

The other thing I'm thinking is the car was originally flood damaged before I bought it and apparently all the electrics where removed and check but could they have missed one wiring connector that has now corroded and lost connectivity?

Have a look under the front passenger side seat. My sons TJ2 wagon was freshwater flood damaged and the wiring loom connection point under the front passenger seat had a couple of burnt out wires which prevented the aerial from working. Repaired the wiring & all was good.

I'll check that out, although it was working fine when I got the car and has only died inthe past 2-3 weeks. That sounds like something that would fail at the time not after the fact. But still a good starting point.

ok I had a look under the passenger side front scuff plate and found a wiring loom + the antenna radio signal cable but no actually connector, do I need to remove the seat to get at it?

You are welcome to drop over, is a quick check to determine if aerial or the wiring is at fault

I took the seat out when working on the TJ2 wagon as the harness plug was under the carpet & mounted towards the front of the seat. If the seat you're removing has an airbag make sure you disconnect the battery & wait a couple of minutes before disconnecting the plug to the seat. Also make sure you have it all reconnected before turning the ignition on otherwise the SRS self check will diagnose a circuit fault and the SRS fault light will remain on.

burnt out motor can cause a break in the circuit giving u your readings...

I was taking the voltage reading across the cars wiring loom, the motor was disconnected at that point. Spoke to Mal who is going to look at it tomorrow then I'll go from there.

The most common fault i found is when the plastic toothed line that is coiled around the motor and drives it up and down snaps from the aerial itself. easy test is if you can move the aerial up or down yourself, if so it has detached as if connected it wont. I bet its this as it makes that noise you described. i did a cheap fix and dismantled the motor and got a replacement aerial with the plastic line attached from wreckers, and coiled it back around its gear.
