View Full Version : How is the rear sunshade held on?
My rear sunshade has come a bit loose and its making an annoying vibration. It looks to me like it's taped down the middle top and then has the 2 clips at each end. But - how do I unattach it from the two clips without breaking it? It looks like it clips down and out but I don't want to stress it in case I break it.
Want to detach, remove the old tape, apply new tap and reattach if I can.
Regards, Tony

When you say rear sun shade, do you mean an aunger louvre?
Aunger mounting clips stick onto the window with double sided tape and each button unclips by turning it anti-clockwise with a star screwdriver.
The mounting kits are still available at parts shops.

I'm thinking you mean the Mitsubishi rear sunshade (aka "grandpa wing") at the top of the rear screen, Tony?
I got a couple of these from the Mitsi Clearance centre (r.i.p!), and had O'Briens help me fit them. The double-tape is applied AFTER a priming solution is put on the glass - so I doubt that "ordinary" double-tape would be as good as the uber-smelly Primer stuff.
If the existing stuff seems strong along a majority of the shade Tony, I'd be tempted to try re-attaching the loose bit with some sikaflex/silastic sealant/adhesive. And leaving the clips at either end alone.
If you want to attack the clips, try to suss-out the two little buttons at each end - I forget if these are a one-piece item that pushes through the shade and through the clip..... or whether they were a two-piece button that pushed together from both sides to clip together. Some others (including Mal - MadMagna) may remember - or some of the SA boys who got the lions share of the Clearance stuff (I know Mal fitted a grandpa wing to one of his cars).
For what its worth the very very slimline weather-strips which extend along the roof over front and rear doors are attached the same way - a very very smelly solvent primer is applied, then the double-tape. I don't know (and kinda doubt) if that Primer stuff is available seperately. The kits of rear shade and weatherstrip kits are supplied with the primer, which is a one-use applicator as far as I recall.
Good luc!

Elwyn is correct, the clips are held on by a collar that comes through from the underneath and a domed pin that pushes into it from above, 'clamping' the shade to the bracket if you will.
To replace the double sided tape, find an automotive store that sells 3m double sided tape for the automotive industry, is the best stuff out there. If 3M says to use a primer do, if they don't, don't worry about it. You need a tape that is 2mm thick (from memory is how thick the factory tape is)
Yep, it's a grandpa wing from before they were popular here - it's been on the car since 2001! The tape along the entire length has come loose - to the point where the wind on Saturday made me think it was going to fly off.
Thanks for the suggestions on what do get, will scare some dollars out of the bank account on the weekend and go looking for the right stuff.
