View Full Version : Idle Revs holding at 1200-1500 and then slowly dropping

Howdy All,

My new TL has a bit of a funny idle rev behavior.. it will sortof stick up somewhere between 1000-2000 RPM (sometimes more like 1300, but has been known to hit 1500 or more) and then slowly drops in a few steps back down to normal idle over a few seconds.

This can be triggered by just tapping the throttle slightly when sitting in neutral (Manual gear box)

I'm guessing this is more likely to be something like a sticky idle controller rather than something intentional to do with manual gear changes.. but wanted to ask if anyone has any input!

Thanks,
Trent

My KL does the same thing (but probably only hits 1,300RPM max), especially if you are reversing for example and take it out of gear while the vehicle is still moving.

As long as it comes back down in a reasonable amount of time, I wouldn't lose sleep over it.

Yeh mine does the same thing, got a bit worse when i had my cams put in. The mechanic did an idle reset or something and went back to normal

Mine does exactly the same thing...

That's what pretty much all Magnas do until the coolant temp sensor and more importantly the fast idle system under the TB discovers the rise in temp and settles the ide. I think it's ridiculous design to allow cold engine jump to such high revs and stay there for several minutes, only gradually dropping!
Haven't tried wnat happens if I disconnect the fast idle system Who wants to try....?

Its done that way to stop the engine from stalling. You don't want Grandpa to stall the engine and lose his power steering and brakes in busy city traffic, do you?
If you don't like the fast idle at cold start, just drive off as soon as the engine fires, like the manual suggests - it settles very quickly that way. Worth checking for a sticky or over tight throttle cable though.

Its normal behaviour in later Mitsus, my wife's Lancer picks up revs when you: Drive off in reverse, turn the lights on, turn the air on and put load on the steering pump. Can be a bit offputting when you manouvre round tight car parks at low revs, and turn the wheel and find the car wants to speed up, but you get used to it, after a while.

Indeed so, I know that the V6 Camry's, both the 1993-1997 shape and the 1997-2002 shape rev up when load is placed on the engine.

For example, simply shift from 'N' to 'D', and once the engine comes into load, it surges forward, so you have to be ready with the brake pedal to stop it. If you knock it back into 'N', the revs will go up to 1800rpm for 3-4sec......I notice this phenomenon in my TL too, but nowhere as severe (only 1200rpm or even a bit less).

Someone once said it's something about the lean-burn technology, that the engine needs to burn off unburnt fuel? I cannot verify the truth of the above though.

Clearly is not a warm up function as he is stating that the throttle needs to be tapped to drop it faster

Could be a sticky throttle plate or could be that the stepper needs to be reset (need a MUT to do this)

May also be a filthy air control valve also, best bet to do a proper TB clean and make sure that throttle cable is not over tightened as well

I've had this happen to me since the manual conversion, I think i've narrowed it down to when I take the car out of gear, but the car is still rolling, as the revs seem to drop when I stop. Seems like normal behaviour to me though.

mine does the same thing when cold, blip throttle and it will hold for a second then slowly drop.

the higher revs when cold bring oil pressure up faster to get oil to all vital components quickly, causing less wear. there was a big discussion thread awhile back about whether to drive off strait away or let it idle low and "warm up".
