View Full Version : SEIZED Front Caliper Guide Pins

Today I replaced my rotors, pads and brake fluid.

To my horror the bottom guide pins both sides had seized. The vehicle has done 88000k and this is it's first pad change. The pins were corroded and clogged with what appeared to be a black molten corroded mess. The pins are pitted and the rubber boots were intact so I am unsure how this happens. TOP Pins were good.

This is the first vehicle in 25 yrs of motoring where i have had pins seized.
Has anyone else had this issue and can you get just the pins replaced?

Also Burson sold me some PBR Rubber grease to lube the pins with. Is this correct? They told me it was the right stuff. It does not look thick enough for high temp.

Never had an issue with the pins being seized although I have seen a few on different vehicles that had signs of water entry ie: corrosion present, took extra effort to remove the slide & had little if any grease applied during assembly/previous repairs.
If the pins are badly corroded (need pics of cleaned up pins) you may need to pick up another set from the wreckers. Shouldn't be any problems replacing the pins provided they are from the same model vehicle with the same caliper set up.

Rubber grease should be OK.
I use CRC sta lube brake caliper synthetic grease on the slides. It contains molybdenum disulphide, graphite, teflon & is suitable for high temp. Is recommended for critical sliding parts in brake calipers.

Cheers

Thanks for the Tip.

Brakes are already back on but basically the first 4mm of the pin from the collar was corroded and pitted after giving it the wire wheel treatment. The protective (gold) treatment is pretty much gone. I'll end up hopefully tracking down replacements but ideally I was hoping to get brand new pins . I hope you don't have to get a whole caliper.

Single piston PBR calipers are easy to come by at wreckers. I would suggest if you've had water ingress and corrosion damage you should get a soft spares overhaul kit in addition to new guide pins. Mitsu will have these. The bottom pins are far more susceptable to corrosion damage especially if the boot was misaligned, twisted or hardened. Was the piston itself in good condition?

Is not unusual for these to do exactly this, have seen many like it

The rubber greese is ideal for these, it will assist to repel water and will not hold dust. Make sure you cleaned it all out and do not apply too much

I did not dismantle the caliper. The piston boot seemed ok, a little crusty and dusty that's all. The guide pin boots at the bottom are still soft and appeared correctly fitted but with one you could see the
corrosion just outside the boot. I guess driving through deep water could cause this.

:hmm: Cleaned it out best I could, could have used too much? I gave it a good coating and poured some in the sleeve. I then inserted the pin in and out several times until it felt free enough. Initially there was a hydraulic lockup caused by the copius amount grease but that cleared by working the pin.

I had the same issue with my TW, nothing could get the Front left bottom pin to move. Replaced.
