View Full Version : TJ 2000 Service
Hi I usually do my own car service but this will be my first time for a TJ 2000 v6 3.5.
1.) Can you guys please help me what is the best oil and spark plugs for that car which has done 118Ks?
2.) Any things i have to look at?
Please advice:
At idle in Drive the engine runs rough (for example at the trafic light) but it runs fine after. The rev is idle not moving up or down. A mechanic has turned a 'screw' to remove the roughness and I was fine for a a day only. He said the fuel system has to be cleaned up.

The mechanic adjusted the base idle screw and masked the rough idle by making it idle faster, however the Idle Speed Controller (ISC) compensates for it and restores the idle to the designated level.
Rough idle is probably caused by old spark plugs and/or leads or a clogged fuel filter.
Well, it is worth changing the leads now.
Do you think i should do the service myself?

As far as oils are concerned I use a a Penrite 10/40 my wagons done nearly 200,000. Spark plugs at your mileage are Platinums. Some on ebay here

only if you know what ure doing... as u need to remove the top intake manifold to access the rear three plugs (plaitnum spelling ) only replaced every 90,000kms... upto you if u replace the leads are they worn, brittle or croded. it might be an idea if u go ahead with the service to to replace the rear rocker cover gasket as well as these tend to go hard and leak.
As for oil its really personal preferance...
looking at the service history, the platinum spark plugs and the front ones were changed @ 103990kms. So i just need to replace the oil, oil filter and the front sparks plugs? By the way where is the oil filter located?

did the timing belt get done?
oil filter i think its on the front drivers side cant miss it really
you will need a big spanner as the oil nut is massive
yep, timing and drive belts were replaced together with the fuel filter. I want to keep this car for a while and I'm thinking to change the spark plugs leads. which one would you recommend?

Sorry to hijack your thread prav, but I'm basically in the same situation as you. I picked up my '03 TJ with 79,000 on the clock and its now sitting on 123,000. Only ever changed the oil / filter a few times, and the timing belt at 105,000. It's got some shudders at idle, and a kind of ticking noise (sounds almost like a diesel engine) that I'm hoping to fix.
Today I picked up some platinum spark plugs, oil & oil filter, coolant and transmition fluid. I'm pretty confident with everything except the spark plugs.
Is it simple to change 3 of the spark plugs, but difficult to change the other 3? How much can I expect to pay a mechanic just to change the 3 rear plugs?
Edit: just did a search and found a few threads. looks bloody complicated. can anyone recommend a maintenance manual that makes it a bit easier to understand?

The haynes manual is easy to understand. its actually a simple job, disconnect anything going to the plenum/throttle body, mark each one with a label as you remove it if you are not confident, then release the upper plenum bolts a quarter turn at a time, working from the center out. when refitting, use a torque wrench to tighten them in 3 stages, again from the center out. ill find my manual and post the torque settings if you want. Just use common sense and take note of everything and where it goes.

I have a KJ wagon and am sitting on 99,000kms. Due for its timing belt any time now. I have a slight vibration I can feel through the steering wheel and brake pedal, when it's idling at some lights and when shifting between 1st and 2nd. I'm suspecting its the transmission mount, so will get that looked at when it goes in for its major service.
Apart from that, she's smooth as silk!

I hope you're using genuine filters, especially the oil filters. And yes Penrite 10/40 is good oil, I use PENRITE HPR15 15W – 50. Both are good options. I simply used this type because my manual said so, well the 15W rating anyways. But Genuine oil filters do make a world of difference. Can be the difference between noisy rattles on start-up and a smoother ride!

Hope to hear from you soon then lol
As for the OP, Penrite HPR 15 is the best oil to use and you may as well just put the platinums in the front thus you do not need to worry about them again until the 200k service

thanks for the reply. i really need a complete step by step guide on how to replace the spark plugs (this is pretty much the first time i've done anything under the hood of a car), so posting all of the pages up that i need would be a bit much to ask :)
i'm actually thinking about buying the Max Ellery manual here (http://www.bookdepository.co.uk/book/9781876720094/Mitsubishi-MagnaDimante-1991-to-2005) for $30, does anyone know how it compares to the Haynes?

my old car had this problem would rev up and down then sometimes cut out took it to ultrtune who hooked it up to the dio computer and they came out with the 02 sensor needs replacing apparently they should be replaced as often as the timing belt

normally speaking would the 3 plugs in the rear be platinum and the 3 front ones not be???? i am due to do my service now and i was assuming at 144km the spark plugs would be fine until somewhere around 200km... i was gunna check the front ones but if i find they are not platinum then i will have to check the rear to make sure they were done also......
i was just gunna check the front and use that to judge the rear..... it will not help if the front are not platinum....
