Can someone help me? I've searched but can't find the answer. I've got a 2002 TJ Magna's that's only done low 30K's. One of my mates is telling me that the timing belt should have been changed after 5 years, but I thought it was around 100k. Does it need changing or not? thanks in advance.

5 years or 100k. Belts perish with age and use, cheap insurance would be to change it.
I am in a similar position, as I just picked up an 02 VRX with 90k on it. Guess what one of my jobs this week is;)

Yeah, that was the first thing I did on my TE Magna. The belt does deteriorate with age as the above comment has sighted after a while even if not in use. To be on the safe side, replace it. You can always manually inspect its condition. I know some people who have never replaced their timing belt even at 200,000 ks but the results if it snaps are an engine overhaul so I'd say if its due, change it.

Is it a pretty straight forward job to do on a TJ? How long would it take, and has someone written a guide on the job?

It's an 8 year old belt, replace it! My wife's 04 lancer has done only 21,000 Km but the belt is now 6 years old and will be replaced soon.

It's NOT a straightforward job. Get the manual and have a read.

I did the job a couple of weeks ago; it took me and my brother a solid 5 1/2 hours to do. The Haynes manual is very helpful, but there are a couple of special tools that you'll need - a torque wrench that goes down to 5 Newton metres, and small tool that's used to set the initial tension on the timing belt (can be had from Mitsubishi for almost $200, or about $40 from the US).

This guide was a good primer for what's involved. It's not the same car as a Magna, but the engine is.

To begin with, you can not tell the condition of a timing belt on visual inspection unless it has completely shredded

It is a common arguement about time, personally I would change after 5 years but many disagree

If you want a quote to replace, let me know and I will be happy to provide one

thanks for the links... I've found a Gates belt, hydraulic tensioner, both pulleys and water pump for around $200AU, just interested in this tool you mention which sets the initial tension...? what is it and where do you get it from?

yeah, but I'd prefer the $40 one from the US instead of the $200 one from Mitsu.

Wook - Are you running an ACT timing belt workshop? :woot:

My 09/04 TL is getting close to the 100,000 and past 5 yr line but it should be getting changed when I arrange to get Graham's head and cams installed in the next month or two.

You saw Codapane got one for $59 delivered and that Australian supplier is still listing them on eBay, I got one a few weeks ago too and they are Gates but no idlers or cam seals.

You got a great price with hydraulic tensioner and water pump - was that from the US? I noticed some US sites (most with a shop online and eBay options) with the full kit, water pump etc for around that price delivered to Oz. I might post up in the eBay thread if anyone is interested.

I got a timing belt from the US. After I won the bid I realized there were restrictions on mailing outside the US of A. Seller wanted $7 for shipping in the US, he added $15 to ship it to Aus. I said "fine" and paid. It arrived quickly, a few days only, with the postage on it of $9.05 Total cost of the belt was $33 US, like $40 AUD. Still a lot cheaper than here, Mitsu dealer quoted "about $100". So my advice is, bid on stuff from the US no matter what the "restrictions" are, and expect to get a message tripling the local postage quoted.

i have done the timing belt 3 times on my car and not once did i use the tool. (twice for cams, once for seals waterpump and belt) its done 60000 since last one, and about 10000 in between the first two.
I really dont see the need to get one, i spoke to a couple of mechanics (working for on cars for 20+ years) and they said they do it exactly the same as i do, with no special tool.

The only one I've done to date was my AWD VRX and I couldn't see the need for the tool. OTTOMH, its 18 months since I did it, when you reset the hydraulic tensioner and rotate the engine a revolution or two it should all be set anyway.

The biggest challenge for me was locking the crank pully to get it torqued. I fabricated an adaptor that is clamped to the chassis cross member adjacent and its now easy. I also recall that the top engine mount is a PITA.

Still, for $15 + P&H I might get one. Can never have too many tools
