View Full Version : Double Din Media Player
Hey guys I did a quick search on the forums but couldn't find what I was looking for.
Pretty much I'm looking for a double din multimedia player. What I want in it is;
GPS
good GUI
Excellent sound quality
Big touch screen
voice control (not that important but might be a nice bonus)
bluetooth
enough RCA's (not that you can ever have enough)
USB (absolute must - needs to support large hard drive as well)
iPod control
Don't really want a cheapy off ebay as I'm looking to keep this long term. I've done a fair amount of research on the net however there is just too much debate and outdated information. Has anyone got a unit like this? Or installed or hve experience with one? Eventually its going to be hooked up to 6 speakers, 2 subs, a monoblock (maybe 2) and a six channel amp. Not sure on those specs yet still gathering everything together.
Thanks, Samm.

Seen these around for about $1500. Good overall unit.
have you had a go with one?
On Jan 26 I bought a end of model Kenwood single DIN 7" DVD touch screen for $350, with optional bluetooth ($150). 2008 GPS is also an option (reduced to $350), but I didn't get that unit.
JB HiFi had 6 to get rid of, I got the 2nd last and the first 4 sold in a week and there's none left now. They normally sell one every 1 to 2 months.
So for $850, I could have had everything that the above Pioneer unit has.
I can't say if the Kenwood is a good unit - for the price I decided to take the risk of it.
So, check out stores, see if they have any clearance items that do what you want.
I finally got the wiring loom for it today so now I just have to install the sucker.
so have you installed your unit oggy? is it good? hows sound quality?

I also have one of those chinese ones and yes it has bluetooth, GPS, touchscreen, handsfree phone via bluetooth (no mic install required) usb input, SD card slot, front/rear/subwoofer outputs, AUX input, video input (for reversing camera) amongst other things that I can't quite remember right now.
Over all it's quite a decent unit however people that spend $1000-$2000 + on their head units will tell you that the chinese ones are rubbish are rubbish.
ars55 hows the sound quality from it? have you just got stock speakers or nice upgraded ones? also do you know what the gigabyte limit on the usb slot is?
thanks,samm

I have a 7' double din head unit in my 1999 Estima van ....has lots of features including TV / Sat Nav with voice control / CD / Cassette
even talks to you in Japanese when you leave the screen in the wrong position.
Lovely sound
Cons - The TV is NTSC so there's no picture.... the FM finishes at 90khz so you miss most the channels ....the Sat/Nav is Japanese only.
Just amazing what they were doing in Japan 10 years ago though.
I have one of the Cheap Ebay China specials..... and so far so good... Got a couple Amps hooked up, with Front Stage, and 12" woofer out back... Sounds Great... GPS works fantastic, as does the TV.... I have a 16gb USB plugged into it, and although its not full, seems to read and play everything... Overall.... Very Happy.. :D

Is that one of the Eonon ones or another brand ? I'm thinking about swapping mine.
This (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-Touch-Screen-2-Din-Car-DVD-Player-Dual-Zone-GPS-DVBT_W0QQitemZ220537422900QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Ca r_Parts_Accessories?hash=item33590e0434#ht_13004wt _939) is the one I got!!

Mine is Eonon brand.
I've got no problem with getting FM channels and I usually watch TV while waiting in line for maccas :D

If anyone has that problem, you can get a 'band expander' to make the Japanese specification radios receive our frequency range. You just have to manually add 16MHz or something to whatever it shows on screen.
This (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/7-Touch-Screen-2-Din-Car-DVD-Player-Dual-Zone-GPS-DVBT_W0QQitemZ220537422900QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_Ca r_Parts_Accessories?hash=item33590e0434#ht_13004wt _939) is the one I got!!
that looks pretty good. hows the sound quality? how long have you had it for? any problems atall? does the digital TV work? and does it need an extra antenna?

hows the GPS on both these models?

What brand of maps are the Chinese imports compatible with? (Route 66, WhereIs etc).

March/April is usually when the big brands change over their models. So you should be able to pick up some good deals on 09 ranged products in stores at the moment. Although on a side note, there'll be more awesome stuff around the corner.
I'd recommend sticking to a well known brand and buying from and Australian retailer, not just about the quality of the product, but it keeps the $$ in the country and supports the economy.
So many varying opinions!:eek2: Hard to know what to do. I am very tempted to get an ebay job for the meantime. If it works and get good sound quality I'll be happy for now. I'll be having the rest of the components high quality so it should sound good. Has anyone actually heard a comparison or even any models and can advise me on the sound quality???

I just got a chinese 2 din as well. Found here (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Erising-ES908D-7-2-Din-GPS-Car-DVD-Player-Autoradio_W0QQitemZ180470487223QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ AU_Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item2a04e118b7): Erising ES908D. Its top of the Erising range so its a bit more expensive than the one suggested by milo but I think you'll like the interface better and the screen is higher resolution (800x480). You can also purchase a lesser Erising model (ES902G (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Erising-ES902G-7-Digital-Screen-GPS-Car-DVD-Player_W0QQitemZ170447503350QQcmdZViewItemQQptZAU_ Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item27af767ff6) for $369 or ES906G (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Erising-ES906G-7-2-Din-Car-GPS-Car-DVD-Player-Autoradio_W0QQitemZ170447503392QQcmdZViewItemQQptZ AU_Car_Parts_Accessories?hash=item27af768020) for $432 or make a offer?) for the same interface/resolution. I got the unit within 5 days which is pretty quick from china. The interface on the Erisings is pretty clean and my screen is really bright and good under direct sunlight, I think it would be the same for 906 as they are the same generation. Don't know abt the 902 as it seem different to mine and might be a previous generation unit. You can read my mini-review here (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75940&page=2).

It's not cheap ($1750?) - but seriously go have a play with the Eclipse AVN726EA in stores.. I really loved it.. navigation was awesome does iPod, etc.. has a CD for .. well.. CDS and flash/internal storage for the maps.
It's what I plan to get later this year! (Also beware the ebay models which are US, your radio, navigation likely won't work)

Hmmm when you can pick up the JVC KW-AVX826 for under $1000 for an Australian model from a store, why would you shop ebay?
Has all the SQ and functionality boxes ticked:
7inch touch screen
Bluetooth
7 band EQ
5V pre outs
Sub control / HPF
USB / Ipod / Iphone compatible
Only thing really missing is T/A. If you want to skimp on the bluetooth and 5V pre outs, the 7 series is cheaper again.
If you want GPS, then the Ecplise and Pioneer AVIC options will be approx $2k for something decent.

Yes I've got stock speakers.
cranked it up yet?
Will give it a try when I get to my car... not really a loud music fan.

Reception is great, I get a cold start times around 30 sec and hot starts have no waiting time as by the time the unit is on and in gps mode, it has your gps location already. The gps is a sirf3 chip so its one of the best chips out, I get around 8 out of 12 possible satellites fixes most of the time. However it would depend on where you put your gps sensor, I have mine on the driver side dash about 5cm from the A pillar and because it has a magnetic base it will hang on to the edge of the small dash speaker so it doesn't move around at all.
The routing and maps is dependent on which software you want to run, they give you igo 8 on a 2GB SD card with Australian map that is second newest map you could find for iGO. I've since changed mine to a newer Igo version and newer maps. You can also run Tomtom as well if you really need the newest maps around, I got that working with no problems. Basically you can run any navigation software that works on WinCE 5.0 platform.

There couldn't be anything further from the truth. The Head unit is your source unit, meaning that whatever comes out of there, goes in to everything else. If you have a bad signal coming from your head unit, then that bad signal will pass in to your amp and on to your speakers, it will in fact make your entire sound system worse.
People often overlook the quality of a Head Unit, but the fact is, it's an area where you can't skimp on if you're using high quality components, clear signal processing is paramount to having good audio quality. You could have the best speakers in the world, but if they are fed a rubbish signal, that's all they can play, good speakers can not pull sound quality out of thin ear, they only reproduce what they are given.

Time Alignment.
Pioneer AVIC F310 is under $775
Step up to the AVIC F900 and it will set you back just over $1550.
Or you could buy a cheaper DVD unit and hook up a $300 Tomtom lol.

Any luck getting the Digital TV to work? Any other negatives?
Can anyone else tell me what the Erising's are like sound quality? I have stock TL speakers plus an amped sub connected to a good JVC head unit...i would want similar quality or better to buy it...

...or has anyone in Vic got one i could have a listen to/play with?
Those Erising's would sound about the same as every other ebay headunit going around like that, horrible. Considering its also what your going to use every time you operate the sound system, as well as the source for everything you hear, I don't understand why anyone would even consider crap like that, especially when there's so many much higher quality units now available with a similar range of features for not unreasonable pricing in local shops.

coz not everyone have acute hearing like you. But still be practical enough to be used everyday... if doof doof isn't your thing. I got one and I haven't got much to complain about it, but you do pay for what you get, this unit has filled a void for me for just over 2 years now, I haven't gotten around to thinking of a better unit yet.
i have decided to go down a different route now and go with a carputer :)

Any suggestions?
Features id like:
-2DIN
-bluetooth for phone
-touchscreen (large)
-usb - mp3's
-dvd - movies
-am/fm tuner
GPS and TV would be nice, but not a necessity (would prefer GPS over TV)
I wouldn't won't to 'downgrade' in terms of sound quality...
Budget: Preferably under $800
EDIT: Actually, as mentioned above, the JVC KW-AVX826 looks the goods...Guess ill have to go into JB and have a looksies...Other suggestions welcome still!...or the AVH-P3150DVD looks good too, but i prefer controls underneath

Great idea to have a play. Always recommend having a play before you decide. :)
If you decide to get it from JB, look at Ryda for prices first as they are usually a lot cheaper than JB and hit them up for a price match.

how is the bluetooth? what type of phone you got?
and to use an ipod, you need to buy another piece of equipment don't you for the JVC?

Being aftermarket the Bluetooth should work with just about anything. If you have an Iphone, as long as you have the firmware up to date it will also work with the JVC.
You only need a special cable for your Ipod / Iphone if you wish to display video from it. This will require the KS-U30. The normal USB will work for music and still allow control.

No photo yet. I am not entirely happy with the position (sits a bit too proud), but I plan on installing a reverse camera soon so I'm not going to worry about fixing it until then. I'll post some pics then.
Bluetooth is fine. Works well with the phone and also for streaming audio through it. I have an iPhone.
As Mr İharisma said, you only need the special adapter if you want to play video via an iPod/iPhone.
