Hi Guys,

after suggestions, tips and straight out help. I have lost the only key to my TR wagon which is sitting locked out the front of my house. Been a couple of weeks now and the key hasn't turned up. Getting to the point where I really need to get this car operational again.

The only thing I can think to do would be to buy a matching set of door locks, ignition barrel and matching key - break into the car, replace locks and be good to go again. Has anyone get a better (cheaper, easier) idea or can see any issues with my plan? I'm thinking the ignition barrel could be hard to remove without the key?

Any help highly appreciated!!!

Cheers,
Sam

Yeah, I think I could break in without smashing a window, getting in shouldn't be the hard part. Im more interested in how hard it is to pull out the ignition barrel and door locks?

RACV would just open the car yeah? Im thinking its not that hard to break into a 93 magna anyway, but every other car (even though its only one...) that I have ever removed an ignition barrel from, needed the key to do so?

Mate you don't have to smash anything ....there are several ways to unlock a locked car. Nylon packing strips is one way, the old coat hanger is another...join the RACV would be ny preferred option especially if i had a TR your going to get your money back.

Bets are on that the key is actually in the car.

Yeah Im confident I can get in the car, just want to know what Im up for once I do (as once its open - I don't really want to lock it again till I have the key)

Don't think the key is in there, I only have key central locking - so the car could only ever really be locked from outside.

I loaned the car to my housemate (taking the key off my key ring in the process) and lost the key before putting it back on my keyring....) Damn!

No need to join RACV, its only my second car - but its a dirty big paper weight at the moment!

I can't remember what sort of door locks a TR has but you get some nylon packing tape make a loop and gently wedge a screwdriver so that the front drivers glass allows you to push the looped tape through the gap. You then manouvre the loop over the door button / lock and lift it up....thus unlocking the car.

Wire hanger. If your car is a classic car or old cars like cars under 500 dollars, things are very easy to solve. What you need is a wire hanger. This is the most common way to retrieve your key out from the car. Straighten the wire hanger to form a hook as shown in picture below, slip it in between the window and the door all the way down until you feel the lock. Pull up the door lock when you feel it and the door will unlock. Take note that some cars lock are different that require you to push down instead of pull up.

Not my decsription but you get the idea.

Try a wrecker for all the bits and pieces.

Have you tried calling a locksmith? They can sometimes make a key to fit a lock - not sure if they can do that for cars/Magna's though.
Also, can Mitsubishi order keys in based on the cars VIN number on the early 2G Magna's ?

Any idea on what the cost is for a key to be ordered from mitsubishi? Would certainly be easier, but Im worried about the cost.... After all, its a rough 93 TR wagon!

A while back I paid $140 for another key to be made and sent from Adelaid. Have you got into the car yet?

To get into cars I use a metal ruler, you have to slot it inbetween the glass and the door seal. then push it down till you hit the lock barrel. Its hard if you've never done it before but it works and doesn't leave a mark on the car.

Ok - thats not out of the question. Do I just call a dealer with the VIN number or is there a special number I should call?

Ok - just called Mitsubishi Australia, they said the dealer could cut a key to suit a Vin number. Called local dealer, they said that it cant be done for a TR, only late model magna's.....

He said that if I take one of the locks into a locksmith, they could cut a key to suit it. Gonna call up a locksmith about that now. Failing that, anyone ever replace the ignition barrel without the key?

Good news - I just have to break in, take the drivers side door lock out and the local locksmith can make a key for $15-$30. Easy peasy!

Wow that's cheap compared to 3rd gens or replacing all the locks - get two or three made while your there.

Just a quick thought. On the second gen's you get two types of keys. One which does everything and one (valet key) which opens the doors and starts the car but won't open the glovebox or boot (I think). I wonder if the locksmith's made key will do everything or not - seeing as it's based on just the driver's door.

Yeah - I am super happy with that news. Just found a bit of packing tape at work and will get stuck into it as soon as I get home!

Certainly cheaper than replacing all locks and a hell of a lot easier too

Read some post so if have repeated advice then sorry

Once yo have the car open which is not hard, remove your RH door trim and take the barrel to a locksmith, they can cut you a new set of keys based on the barrel numbers

I had a key cut and it won't open the boot, but you can live with that, and my glove box opens to anything (I think, screwdriver etc..)

Spot on GRDPuck if u have your rego papers or go to the RTA and get your VIN (Chassis Number) Ring up the mitsubishi 1300 help line and they'll give you a key code - this could potentially be written in the owners manual and the locksmith I used cut the key to code for $24 I had a door and ign key but (Valet key) but not the key that did boot, glove box, doors and ign
