Thought I would ask here before taking it to workshop to find problem.
Driving back from Brisbane couple of days ago, heard the fan belt slip then the aircon stopped working. All the controls still work, digital display says it's working but not cold air. There are no obvious noises, checked the belts and they are fine - just no cold air! When it was working, would turn it on and hear it engaging, but now nothing at all.

Are there any things I could check to find the fault?

Any help would be appreciated :-)

belt hasn't come out of place? all tensions are okay? your air con pulley hasn't seized? all I can think of...

blown hose / front compressor seal? check for oil/dye around compressor clutch
if you bridge the switch on the receiver drier (below battery) with the a/c on and engine running and the compressor clutch engages then you can safely assume that you've lost the gas somewhere

I'd say you've lost the refrigerant, time for a re-gs

Have figured out that the magnetic clutch is not engaging on the air compressor, not sure what I can do about it but suppose will have to take to mechanic to sort out :-(.

Also, read on another site that some cars air con unit will stop working when runs low on refrigerant? As the compressor not working, any way to actually check whether has any gas or not? I don't have any cable to bridge the drier to see if unit actually works - pain not having any basic tools!

Can't see any obvious leaks around unit, don't use the air con very often (probably the cause of problem!) as I such a tight sod about fuel economy - amazing how much I miss it now that I can't use it!

nope no way to check the amount of gas in unless u take to an auto elec or mechanics... they will hook up pressure gauges to the low and high sides of the system and be able to tell more about the problem... are u sure u dont have a broken wire or blown fuse for the mag clutch???
