I'm looking into making coloured dials for the 2nd gens, here is what I've done so far.

I know the colour is a little out, that's just from jpeg conversion and from photoshopping too late at night lol
What I'm trying to do at the moment is to find out what sort of transparent material would be good to print out on and then I'll make a test set and see how they go. That test run will decide if I will make any for anyone else :)
So any help will be greatly appreciated as far as materials I could use are concerned.
Cheers guys, would like to know what you think...

looks alright dude. may i ask, where did you get those templates from?

Looks alright mate. If you were going to the trouble of doing it, I would probably be looking into changed the text font for the numbers and have them ever so slightly at an angle. A more custom modern look would be more appealing and would make it look more unique. Keep posting your updated versions so we can admire/constuctively criticize it and make it look universally kickass!

perhaps if you were looking to do it on the cheap you could print onto that overhead projector film stuff, maybe for prototype ones anyway, also perhaps it could be screen printed onto a piece of plastic film or something?
Either way, looks good!

Ahhhh only if you thought of this 4 years ago lol , I had access to a colour Laser printer at highschool, could have printed them on transperant A4 sheets with awsome quality, we tryed making fake Probationary Liscences back then the quality was spot on, it's just that it was missing the reflective film they put over the top of them lol

Yeah they were only ideas to start off with, I can pretty much do anything with them now.
I actually prefer the look of the numbers as is...but that's just my preference.
And the templates...I scanned them, I have a spare set of dials.
Thanks for the replies and ideas..I'll look into the overhead stuff...that's what I've been thinking about.

Paul those dials are to suit a 4cylinder auto cause the speedo only goes to 200, not 220.
a good idea for the tacko could be to get rid of the black bit down the bottom, and make your redline go to like 9,000 or 10,000 seeing your new redline will be 7000rpm+ with the DOHC

Now that would be awsome 10,000rpm tacho in the factory position, much better then having an aftermarket gauge

yeah that would be my choice also, make the redline or in killbilly's dials "YELLOWLINE" :P start at 7rpm

Thanks for the replies and ideas..I'll look into the overhead stuff...that's what I've been thinking about.
The only thing I can think off that is bad about the overhead clear cheets is that if the ink/paint isn't thick enough, you might get glow through to the point it makes the numbers hard to read

i think the overhead stuff would work ok. youd just have to be very careful gluing it on. phonics concerns shouldnt matter as long as you used the right ink, because if the ink was transperent overheads wouldnt work either! you could even get multicoloured dials by adjusting how much colour used and remove the coloured sheaths on the lights so you had say a thick black background with illuminated red numbers etc. or just get coloured plastic i spose. im just waffling now. im veri interested though paul. more than happy to help where i can.

yeah I know they're 4 cyl dials...they're just hte spare set I had lying around at home, I will do the V6 one when I get my car back.
I was going to change the redline area on the tacho to start at 7,000 with the DOHC

KB, i've looked into this a while back as my brother does (with his trick C.A.engraving machines) dials and switch plates for all sorts of things including Aeronautical stuff!...
the problem is that the material on the back is a high luminance stuff that carriers light very well... we couldn't find any decent material that will do that  , he has all sorts of double layered plastics (mostly clear one side, opaque colour the other) that we thought would be great, but we couldn't get it to light up consistently  (thats without to many mods to the actual dial mounts)
if you find a decent material, my bro could wip you up the gauges in a day... let me know if you find something decent and i'll get him on to it... (he was also keen to manufacture these when we were looking into it, but as we couldn't find the material, we gave up)
dingo
02-06-2004, 03:48 PM
oh yeah, and if you find the material, he can do any design you want, no matter how complex!!! so design to your hearts content!!!

how would (who eva is making them) add to the tacko? like.. u to 10,000
wont u have to change the now the need points etc etc?
cant explain... erm....
there isn't enought space to add 10,000 without the tacko pointing to the wrong number
if i make n e sence at all
and also a small suggestion......
glowing back? like a sports watch? howeva that is gonna be made.. hmm
or even just norm glow in the dark stuff, (dunno where that is gonna get sunlight from in the car at night, LoL!)

I will buy a set off either KB or EVL-TR if there a good price.
hey EVL-TR how did you do yours
Glenn
03-06-2004, 08:26 PM
I had them scanned into photoshop then modified them to suit my needs (color etc) - then saved them as a pdf file and had them printed on some hi quality paper (thin stuff so the backlight shines through)then just simply glued them on top of my existing ones - simple yet effective. then i modded my surrounding lites with hi-intensity LED's to get the blue effect.
I have the .pdf images here somewhere of one of my pcs HDD's - if i find them, im happy to hook whoever up with them - i can host them so all you have to do is save and print :D
any takers??? if so ill have a look
*if people want custom ones I can do that also - but that will cost - depending on what you want*

so whats the deal with yours though evl-tr? do the numbers no longer illuminate?
Glenn

yeah MAGWGN they still do - thats why you have to use thin good quality paper so when you place them over the existing dials - the light can still shine through. :D

so does anyone have the v6 dial pics??
if anyone does have em, can they please put em up here??

These are photoshop files, I've already separated the numbers and other parts, so they're all in separate layers, hence the big sizes. If anyone wants, I can merge them and put them up again.

One thing ppl, the 200 kmh is for the Magna's with 14" wheels. The 220 is for the magna's with 15's.
The elite is a 4cyl with the 220kmh speedo and also 15" factory wheels.
The XI Verada have italic dials as with the Elite.
The Elite is just a 4cyl XI verada, has all the features except the ECS in the KR

thats the great thing about the way im thinking of doing it, because you will basically be able to have any combination you want. i wanna get the external colour cut out of whatever colour paper or maybe thin plastic you want, then layer it over the coloured gel you want. that way during the day you can have say white dials with dark numbers etc, then when you turn your lights on they glow through green. if we can get the dials cut out well it should all work perfect.

yeah guys, my brother can cut them to 1/10mm accuracy and any design is good (KB i don't have photoshop here so i'll have to wait till i get home to check yours), and the numbers can go to what ever you want (300km/h sound good - althought it will be right around to 0 again  ), all he needs is the design and the appropriate dimensions (exactly), i'll get him to do a couple of samples if KB's are suitable...

how much are we looking for a set?
hmmhmm
and just 1 questions, with the TR,, the back light.....
it is a back light?? or it is a some sort of light on the top??
cause when i had a look at my light, it seemed like it was comming from the top and not back lighting if i make n e sence....
Killbilly

There's a light behind the dials and a light that shines onto them.
I'm not sure of cost, I'll just have to make a test set and see how I go.

It's going well...I did some more ones as the 1st set weren't that great. I've gotten rid of that mottled effect the stock ones have and have just done a solid red colour. They look great. I also printed them on a glossy photo film which is actually a thin plastic. They look great, the light actually shines through them quite well and evenly. I've left the stock dials on behind them and taken the blue socks off the bulbs in the cluster. It's working really well...I'll get some photos soon.
The only thing is that I forgot to merge the 0 before I printed them lol...so there is no 0 on my speedo lol...Which doesnt matter because I never stay there for long ;)
does anyone have high quality scans of the 220km dials?

Hey Killbilly
I'm after some red dials for my 4 cyl magna TS, if you have a good pdf file or whatever you could send me :D
I'm happy to pay you for them if you want, just let me know
Killbilly
07-07-2004, 06:06 AM
Sure mate, I'll post them on my FTP server again
http://home.swiftdsl.com.au/~baker/dialstuff.zip
In that zip file is everything for both 2nd gen V6's manuals and autos.
32mb - The reason for the big size is that all the dials are already separated into layers, so all you need to do is just change the colours and you're away.
I recommend doing "Replace Colour" on the writing and making it perfectly white, by making the lightness full before doing anything else.
I did that on some of the dials but not all. I'm uploading the file now (8:06am 7/7/04) so give it about 20 mins :D
