Yes, i have searched but i want to be sure so i dont die.

By removing the negative off the battery, does it stop the air bag from going off? I ask as i have an after market positive battery terminal that takes allen keys, which i cannot find.

to be even safer, leave it for a smoke (if you dabble) after you disconnect the negative (there is a recommended 'leave it alone' time, found it here once). When I swapped my dash over, I was as nervous as anything when I disconnected the passenger side air bag. Wife asked if she heard a loud bang should she call an ambulance, I told her to call the morgue, since my head was going to be right next to it :)

Haha nice. Well, all is good. I left it for about 5 mins after i disconnected it anyway.

Also, turns out that the airbag model steering wheels had what it seems to be part of the moulding cut away to have the airbag fit in. The leather wheel i installed didnt have these moulding cut away. Not fun to find/figure this out after i had the wheel mounted in... Too another 10 mins to cut all the crap away!

The wheels of third gens are all identical, there is no difference at all. Yes I ahve changed that many over I do know lol

You may have had a different plastic backing, this is fixed by removing 4 screws and changing it with the one you have

There are 4 different backing plates but as stated all the wheels are the same

Is a good idea to pop the neg terminal, I dont bother, I usually flick the plug which then in turn shorts the 2 terminals and renders the srs system non operational.

main thing is not to try and start the car with the bags off or your srs box will trip into warning mode, the only way to clear this is to use a Mutt to reset the codes. If you need to do this you will need to either see myself or Mits to get this fixed

This is weird.... Because i had to cut the rubber moulding away to fit the steering wheel.... I'll go take a photo of the wheel that i removed to show what im talking about.... Because the airbag would not fit, no matter what i did. All good now though...

This is what im talking about

A: Is the molding that im talking about. What i think was used to create the steering wheel from the plastic mold.
B: Is what was cut stock on my steering wheel. If you have a look at the one on the right, it has a small sticker, on this it says something like checked May 03 on it.

But on the leather wheel i got, it had what A looks like on all 4 corners.... So essentially i just did what the guys at mitsu did and cut them away

mate, is because you are missing all of your mounting brackets

As stated, I have mixed and matched so many times, there has never been any reason to cut anything

Thats a photo of my old wheel. Im not saying your wrong or anything Mal, im just trying to explain it as well as i can. This is the first time ive ever done it so yeaha....

I pulled that out of the bin to show you what i was talking about. Because my problem was that the airbag/horn assembly itself was what was getting caught. The leather wheel i got didnt come with the mounting brackets, even if it did, i think it would still have got caught on the moldings as it didnt even get a chance to touch them on the bottom.

Im not trying to have a go or anything, i just find this really weird because the leather wheel came off a TJ2 AWD and i have a TJ2 exec. The wheels where exactly the same except the leather wheel had the bottom moldings but the stock one didnt?

Any thoughts?

Just a question, did you re use the airbag mount from the old wheel, ie is it secure

I did yes. All i did was clone what my wheel looked like
