..my mechanic reckons is will cost around $390 and he'll need the car for 3 days. I was under the impression it was a simple procedure - remove trappings > remove old lining > flex and seat new lining > install trappings. Guess I was wrong..

It is a simple procedure - just not cheap! Try doing it yourself! SEARCH if you want some ideas.

Tell him to take a hike, seriously. I have done 3 of these myself now and they are a piece of piss.

It takes me about 3 hours and thats with a lot of stuffing around drinking and such. Just take your time to do it right the first time and have a mate to help.

It's never been more than $50 for the fabric and that was some think plush stuff worse than Tuffys lol The glue was less than $30 too for some contact adhesive and spray glue too.

Go nuts, it's pretty hard to break anything if your patient and observant. I'm neither of those things and still managed it.

Are we talking hood lining or roof lining here? A "hood" is american slang for a bonnet, which would imply the bonnet lining (on the inside)...

If it's the bonnet lining I wouldn't bother. I ripped mine out because it was wrecked, mainly there to stop noise and vibration but I didn't notice a difference

So your mechanic recons 3 days, what a wanker

I did mine in under 20 mins outside the mits clearance centre in SA when I got it, did not want to keep my dirty one and as they were selling them for like 20 bucks, grabbed a few tools off Caine and before he could dig out my new sun visors I had it changed.

Is a simple matter of visors and clips off, remove mirror more to get it out of the way, b and c pillar covers off, remove front seats to make removal from the cabin easy, remove int lights (4 screws) and then drop the little sucker out

I did a wagon one in 30 mins to remove, that is with removing all the extra plastic trim and I was not trying to set records given it was spotless and I did not want to mark it at all

I didn't remove the mirror or the front seats, it might make it easier but it can be done with them in.

Aaah. Communication breakdown. I was under the impression that I was getting a new hood lining, however the mechanic is giving it to an upholsterer to tart up. I can take the car back each day so it's all kosher. Getting some other things done and depending on what he finds he may need the whole 3 days for parts and things (oil leak around rocker cover and/or camshaft seal - apparently there is a risk my new timing belt may be getting oiled and will need replacing).
