G'day,
i decided to pull the timing light out and check my iginition timing on my EFI 2.6.

It was set to about 9 BTDC.

now heres my little problem....the Gregories manual states 2 figures.

EFI Models-
With timing check connector Earthed : 5 +- 0.5 BTDC

and

With timing check connector capped : 13 +- 2 BTDC

Seeing as though it was set to 9....i upped it to 13 thinking im doing one of two things; setting it correct or advancing the timing> If it started pinging i would have put it back. I've left it on 13BTDC, the car seems to be running really well but i just want to clarify if i am using the correct figure.

The timing light im using connects to the +ve and -ve battery terminals and to the spark plug for the 1st cylinder if that helps at all?

Cheers,
Matt

i duno the exact figures ya need but i know its advanced too far if it starts pinging, and its retarded too far if it starts backfiring (exessively)...

You should have the check connector earthed and then you set the timing

You did the correct thing dude. No need to worry about that other figure. If you have it set at 13 degrees she'll be running sweet

my car back fires excessively
what does that mean, its real loud as well [ a bit like v8 supercars] :)

does that mean i lose power when it's too retarded?

people what is everyones timing set at on your TP or TN EFI Magna has anyone advanced it further than 13 degrees and just kept putting PULP in cause i got my valve stems seals done by a friend and when he took it for a drive he notice it pinged at low revs so i think he backed it to ten degrees and then i got new spark plugs for it as it still did ping at 10 degrees and he backed it off again to 8 degrees it doesnt ping anymore but i tried to adjust my timing my self without a timing light and i just wander whether i should get some money stop beeing cheap get a timing light and up it to like 15 degrees and just keep putting bp ultimate 98 ron into it ok maybe 14 what do you people thing the tm-se guy has done the same thing but he has a carby so it may have a different effect on my car i just want to have the maximum amount of power without actually harming the engine please tell me stories what do yous think

Hi everybody.. newbie.

u can hear it it sounds like a very annoying rattle and tick together i dont know how to explain sounds like coins rubbing together or something
Yeah, thats a ping
Pinging can also be due to the low octane content of some fuels. Most high performance import cars suffer from this.
But the aston ii has fairly low compression so it wouldn't be that.
It must be the timing. It should be at about 13btdc give or take a degree (for error mainly)
Check the idle rpm too, if it is not right, it can change the vacuum pressure in the engine and that can move the advance of the timing in or out (i forget... it might be out?)
