Third genners, Once the fuel light starts flashing how much fuel is left before it's gone? I've heard with most cars it's about 30ks? Is that the same for magnas? My car is a stock TF (3.0 V6) if that makes a difference

Cheers!

Well, ive been told 50km..... But i once drove 96km after the fuel needle hit the "E".... Filled up with 65.35L.... Was about 130km after the light hit

i normally get 100+ km once the light comes on...

ADR requirement was 30km, however the Magna gives you quite a bit more. I've only let it get to "fuel surge" point once, that was 75km of fuel light on...

The light comes on from about 80% tank capacity...

Oh so I'd have like 20ish litres left?

By my calcs (TE 3l) I should get 100km from light on. Bring it!

Thanks :) Well it's only doing the flash thing right now so it isn't even solid.. I'll fill up tomorrow anyway!

Thanks for the help guys.

Take a picture and post so I can have a look where your guage is compared to when my fuel light comes on. But given past experience...mine comes on roughly about 400-450kms on "normal driving" so i'd guess just below 20Litres

Guys,
You are mad if you drive on that low amount of fuel for the following reasons

1/ you are sucking all the gunk out of your tank
2/ you risk lean out from sucking air, this can cause engine damage and also cause you to crash if your engine cuts out as well
3/ is the best way to destroy your fuel pump, have seen a few explode as the fuel lubricates the rollers within the pump

I drive around constantly with stuff all fuel, my light usually leaves me hanging with 10L left max.

Once had a surge so good I got wheelspin going round a corner lol

But as mentioned above, it's really not good for it.

I filled my 99 TH sports and put a fuel can in the boot, once the light came on I set the trip meter and got 198 km's before she ran dry, I reset the computer while she was empty, now I get 60 kms after the light comes on.

I agree with points 2 and 3. Point 1 is crap. The fuel pump pickup is in the bottom of the tank and the crap always settles to the bottom regardless of fuel level.

:roflwtf: thats terrible !! Nice one. I never let my fuel light come on. Prefer to keep the tank above half at all times. Old man was an engineer and he used to tell me all the gunk in the tank is sucked in when the fuels low too. Although I didnt know the fuel pick-up is at the bottom of the tank, that's a first....

what "gunk" is going to be floating around in the tank of a car less than 15 years old? unless it's been sitting for an extended period (months!!), fuel doesn't get "dirty" and if there's something in the tank that's heavier than fuel it'll be the first thing sucked up anyway.

I've opened many magna fuel tanks, and never seen anything but fuel.

getting an extra 100km out of the 15L or so left in the tank after the light goes on isn't mad. think about it, your car uses less fuel if it's lighter.

but yeah, don't run it all the way dry. that's bad, mmkay?

cheers,

I wouldn't recommend letting it run low at-all (not just fuel light low, low in general) - even before the fuel light comes on if you take a corner hard enough you may get surge (It has happened to me once or twice) the last thing you want while going around a corner is a sudden surge of power on one wheel!

hey my fuel light flashes a lot is this normal? even when i have a full tank

Well, you've pretty much answered the question yourself there lol. Seeing as the fuel light is a "low fuel" indicator/reminder...having it flash [on a full tank] certainly wouldn't be considered "normal"...

Eitherway, with regard to the "gunk" story. You certainly wouldn't expect much gunk in your fuel tank but if the theory of sediments at the bottom of your tank does run true, why bother putting your car at risk anyways? Pretty sure the general consensus here is that low fuel doesn't benefit your car in anyway (well, unless you want to use "less fuel :S) ....but it can be DANGEROUS...

my thinking was that it might be telling me that i was using above the average fuel per 100kms when it flashed on

Yeah, the fuel gauge becomes faulty after about 120,000 kms (what mitsubishi told me, mine went out a bit later than that)
I drive for about 70kms and it will tell me it's empty, but the computer tells me how much fuel i've used so i know when to tank up.

Also got it gas converted and if the fuel is saying its empty, for some reason it will say gas is empty too.

My fuel light came on the other day when it hit the last line before empty. it turned off after about half a minute but i just thought it was weird and was wondering if this is about the same for everyone else?

Haven't really had this happen in my TL, but happens in my TS.. essentially if you stop on a hill or something fuel runs from one end of the tank to the other making it appear emptier than it is.. if you move off it goes back to normal and you have a bit more to go before it's on solidly.

Any idea how much it costs to get these replaced? The fuel gauge that is...I have a feeling mines not perfect but just out of curiosity.

I wish Magnas were quite that advanced. Reasonable theory though....

it's not the gauge that dies, but the fuel sender unit.

if you search there's a couple of decent threads about replacing it yourself. they run about $100 from Mitsu and take about 15 minutes to fit.

I always fill up as soon as the light comes on - it's just nice to know how far you can go if you find yourself in the middle of whoop whoop without a servo.

Same. It will come and go depending on the slope of the vehicle until it reaches a point where it will stay on.

Exactly!

I dont even do that.. She drops below the 1/4 tank point I start looking for the nearest servo..
I accidently (well sorta kinda missjudged) ran my Vitara dry and it was an absolute pain in the asolomio to get it going again. Had to replace the Fuel pump,Fuel filter and have the injectors cleaned as all the crap in the tank went through the system..

Quarter of a tank is a good time to fill, if you have gas don't let it drop below that. Fuel pump tries to maintain pressure even when on gas, if you empty the petrol tank and switch to gas, the fuel pump will destroy itself. (Advice from Midas, diagnosing/explaining why a Commodore wouldn't start on petrol.)

That reminds me! The only time I've ever run out of petrol was on the Bandit trying to look for premium in Warwick - must have been to 5 servos before I made it to the truck stop. The (then) missus had to push me the 12m to the bowser mwuhuhu! Does that technically count as running running out of petrol??
