Hello all, I have just bought a 88 TN magna to get around in the wet weather. I usually ride several motorcycles but since I am in Darwin ( am i the only one ? ) and it is wet season, I need to get to work and back without getting drenched.
My Beast is an injected 4 cyl manual, metalic grey colour with navy blue interior and must be the luxo pack as it has electric everything, boot wing and side skirts.
My problem is that it has the steering column mounted switches for lights, wipers, fan control etc and the flat paddle type indicator switch has just snapped off where it pivots in the switchblock.:eek2:
Looks like it has been glued before where the pin goes through to secure it but it is beyond repair now. ( I can hear you all laughing from here !).
I assume the complete unit which mounts to the column is non-existant or priced so high that i would have to win Lotto to buy one so is there a fix or do i scour the wreckers up here ( there are not too many ) and hope i get lucky.
I have managed to use my finger to turn on the indicators as the inner cover for the switch has been removed by previous owner but its a pain to have to do. ( i have strong fingers from using brakes on bikes).
Anyone?

Like any 22 year old car, plastics get brittle and new parts are hard to get hold of. I wouldn't get a second hand one, if available, because it is likely to do the same.

Pull the thing apart, lay out the broken bits and superglue them together. Depending on how much clearance you have, you could then reinforce it with a wrap of fiberglass matting and resin, then sand it back and hit it with a coat of matte black. Should look ok and will last forever.

to get a wing controller

you can search any model sedan or wagon TM, TN or TP with the wing controller

and the loom colours at the plug ins might be slightly different

the part that is broken is also the high and low beam for the lights

Thanks for the info folks. I had thought of pulling the switch apart and fixing but it was too far gone to repair.
I managed to find a wreckers up here that had a complete steering column assembly so i bought it for 100 bucks. Cheap i thought. He reckons he has another one in better condition stashed in a box so he will dig it out and ring me when he locates it. I have installed the new one and all is working fine.
I will purchase the spare one and put it in storage if i need one in the future. The paddle would be a weak point in the switchgear i think ,as it gets used everytime you drive and cops a lot more use than the other switches.
I am really enjoying driving this car as my only other transport apart from bikes is a 5 ton truck.
Even after 22 years, this is a very comfy and good performing car. Glad i bought it.:woot:

Yep. They are great little cars. Only reason I got rid of mine is because it fell apart and started to rust bad. The Magna was the best car ive owned.
