Hey guys, just wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for removing the crank pully on a 3.5L 3rd gen auto without the propper tool for doing it.
Doing a timing belt and water pump, so it's got to come off, but the rattle gun we've got can't put out enough torque to get the bolt off on its own.

We're aware of the trick of putting a breaker bar straight on the nut, then cranking the engine over to spin it and crack the seal, but we don't really want to do that as we've got the engine completely apart and that would necessitate putting at least a couple of bits back on.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Conversely, if anyone's got one of the tools in Adelaide they're willing to loan me (And my mechanic friend) for a day, that'd be awesome.

Thanks.

I did the missus' TJ the other week, I used WD-40, a breaker bar with an extension, and a piece of 1" tubing, with an old manifold bolt in it to stop the crank from turning. Just wedge the tube against the ground, with the bolt in the crank pulley hole (on the downward turn). The engine mounts cushion the effect though to make it more difficult. It did take some patience.
I hate auto's;)

try cranking the compressor up a bit if u can, if not use the starter

Good suggestions, thanks.
The compressor is already on max, I think the biggest problem is that we've got a 20M hose off the compressor** so we lose a bit of pressure down the length of it. We could try moving the compressor closer to the car, that might help. But the rattle head is also rated lower than the specs for that nut anyway, so we think that even the actual head might not quite pull it off.

We'll see how we get on with the bolt + breaker + tube + WD40 solution.

If that fails, we'll move the compressor.
If that still fails, we'll have to use the starter to do it. :)

** = The garage is an under-house garage down a fairly steep driveway, the car is just a tiny bit too low to actually get into the garage, so we're working at the top of the driveway, 20M away from the compressors home.

I really hope you have the correct tool to set the timing belt tension

Unless you have the belt already off the cam gears, there is nothing stopping you unplugging the CAS and cranking

It can be also done by removing the starter motor and wedging a pinch bar or other heavy flat steel item in a vertical fashion between the teeth of the starter cog thingy and housing to stop the crankshaft turning, worked for me.
