Hi All,

I am planning to upgrade my rims to 18". Currently running 225/55R17 on 17x7 40+ offset rims. Could people with 18" rims reply with their details to aid me in chosing the right sized tyres and rim offsets. Ta.
Don't know if there are any differences between the J and L/W series so include that info as well.

Car Series:
Rim Brand:

Rim Offset:
Tyre Brand:
Tyre Size:
Gap between tyre inner shoulder and upper suspension arm of the rear tyres:

Here's some examples from AWDs:

Apparently 235 wide is fine on a +35 to +38 offset 18" rim.

I'm currently running 235/40/18 tyres on my 18x8" rims with a +45 offset in the rear, and probably a +31 offset in the front.. the reason why i've got different offsets is because of the Brembo's, and also due to the fact that the tyre place I went to gave me 2 rims with a +45 offset and 2 rims with a +37 offset... go figure! If your car is lowered, you'll get rubbing in the front with an offset as extreme as +31, but the +45 in the rear sit fine (my car is AWD).

So, anything with an offset from +35 to +45 and an 18x8" rim will fit without any issues.

Car Series: KJ AWD
Rim Brand: ROH
Rim Size: 18" x 8"
Rim Offset: +35
Tyre Brand: Kumho KU31
Tyre Size: 235/45/18
Gap between tyre inner shoulder and upper suspension arm of the rear tyres: Enough room, have had 38+ offset wheels with the same tyres - no dramas
Protrusion out of guard: Rear - None, Front - None, but have 1.5 neg camber which may help.
Car lowered or not: King Low SPs.

Car Series: TL VRX AWD
Rim Brand: RJR
Rim Size: 18x8"
Rim Offset: +35
Tyre Brand: Dunlop SP Sport Maxx GT
Tyre Size: 235/40R18
Gap between tyre inner shoulder and upper suspension arm of the rear tyres: Don't know exactly but its clearing safely.
Protrusion out of guard: Front, thanks to the thick sidewall of the tyre about 3mm, the rim itself isn't though. Rear is fine.
Car lowered or not: About 40mm lower than standard.

Lugo, would it be possible for you to take a photo of you front wheels from the top, over the guard to see how much the tyres are protruding. Hopefully mine won't be as bad. I'm going for an RJR 18x8 +35 offset with 225/45R18 tyres which should protrude 5mm less than yours does.

Cheers,
Vlad

Got RJR Blade 18x8 wheels with +35 offset with 225/45R18 Nexen N7000 tyres fitted today at Bob Jane's Gouger St in Adelaide. Interesting that I am able to see a bit (3mm) of the front tyre's sidewall from the top eventhough my tyres are 10mm narrower than Lugo's. I might try a set of 235/45R18 when changing tyres next. I've now got to change 4 x 225/55R18 tyres for the Outlander at $450 each (oem fitted Bridgestone Duellers) or $380 each for Yoko Geolanders.

Sisewall being visible is legal, though. It's the tread that has to be inside the guard.

If you go to a 235/45/18 as your next tyre, you'll have less choice available to you, plus you'll have to remodel the inner guards at the front. Mine scrubbed like hell, even just on half turns.

It's all the tyre that protrudes, the old MA-V1's I used to have didn't protrude at all, the Dunlops on the other hand, well you can see in the photo. Measures about 3mm, sidewall is 5-6mm thicker than the Maxxis that were on these wheels.

Rims look great mate, they really suit the car.

As said, sidewalls sticking out of the front are fine. It does come down to the particular tyre - those Nexens you have seem to bulge slightly (simply because of their design, my old Goodyears did the same). In comparison the Maxxis MA-Z1s I have have a very flat sidewall (so the tread sticks out slightly instead lol)

O/T, but the Geolanders are a brilliant tyre.... I don't know how they compare to the Duellers, but we replaced the Michellin highway tyres on my brother's Holden Jackaroo with a set of Geolanders and the difference is amazing. They're a quiet tyre, but the grip is phenomenal. I did some braking practice in it before I took it on a recent highway trip, and I found that when performing an emergency stop at 100km/h, it was nearly impossible to lock up the brakes, despite not having ABS.

That I know. Its the tread that can't be visible. I also think its the wheel that is quiet close to the outside being +35 offset. The 225 wide tyre is actually stretched to fit whereas the 235 wide tyre will stretch less. One thing though, there's more arch gap now. I had 225/55R17 tyres on 17x7 wheels and the amount of gap made the car look lowered. Now its not. Also, thanks for the info on the Geolanders. Will do that in 3 weeks time to give my credit card a break.

I can't speak for the sizes fitted to your Outlander, but be aware that Subaru Outback/Forester owners generally pan the Geolanders. On those cars, they typically struggle to get more than 20000km out of them.

In that case the Bridgestone Duellers are not that much better, if not worse. The Outlander has only done 18000kms and the front's have 1mm left above the wear mark and the rears have about 2mm above the wear mark. This is due to the fact that for the first 13000kms of its life it ran FWD only.
