Does or has anyone else had this with their TS/TR?? I know a few people who all say its a common thing but it annoys the shit out of me... basically when the car is in an idle state it sounds like a tracktor in the engine.... is there any way to fix this?? i am a total n00b when it comes to cars and engines so i have no idea if its somthing very simple or not.

cheers

Use the search function. Plenty of threads out there about it.

The fix most recommended is using a heavier weight Penrite Oil.

Can you give us details as to the engine type (2.6 4cyl or 3.0 v6) and how many ks its done?

If it is a TR 4 cylinder with more than 200,000 Km on the clock we all know what the problem is! Worn chains and guides. Not an easy fix. Thicker oil might help for a while.

If it was an easy fix, you wouldn't see so many tractor engined TRs trundling through shopping centre car parks with annoyed looking drivers! lol

I got a tractor sounding engine but it to do with exhaust pipes and it only happen a low rpm or when it feels like. But it doesn't worry one bit, I always get strange and laught it off. :)

without much more info id say it sounds like the timing chain/balance chains need to be replaced. you can get kits on ebay (ringwood auto parts i think). there about 100 bucks, but thats the easy part. now try to find someone to put them in for 800 or less (and do a good job) is the tricky part. ( unless you can do it yourself).

Most of the problems encountered revolve around a poor maintenance schedule ie oil changes not being done on time and with quality oils. (Not saying it's you but most people don't carry out regular maintenance so could have been previous owners as some of my previous cars can testify)
Before you jump in to replacing expensive parts try the Penrite ... you could also try an engine flush product which is what I'm going to use on my TJ Sports Wagon which will reach 200,000km's but lifters are OK. http://www.liqui-moly.com.au/product1.htm

If it doesn't work ... all you have done is changed your oil to a good one and flushed out some of the gunk etc. and it will give your engine a few km's.

its a TS SE 1992 (i think!) and has only done about 90,000kms, i actually do recall the sound going away when i got some new oil put in at my last service, but since its come back, so maybe ill try some of this super dooper penrite stuff...

Cheers for the quick replies... and btw i did try a search but nothing came up, must have missed something.

I agree with the Liqui-Moly. When my engine was noisey, I used a can of liqui-moly MOS2 Anti-Friction Engine Treatment and Tappet Stop Noise after a fresh oil change. After 5 days of low klms running around, the noise was gone and has not returned.

as i underestand there are 2 oil filters for the 4cyl motor..use the shorter one as it gives better pressure..and old mitzy mechanic up this way who worked with the ralliart boys told me that,he also told me to add a cup of diesel to the oil before you change it..let it idle for a minute then drop it out.use i think it was 20/50...anyways something like that anyways...good luck!

Yes you can do the old diesel trick but its not good for the seals. You would be better off using a proper engine flush in the meantime to see if it does work for you before investigating further.
