ok, so the starter is buggered, only makes clicking noises and no matter how much i hit it with a hammer and steel pipe it wont start.
looks to be in a bit of a prick of a spot, and im guessing the exhaust down pipe has to come off. is the solenoid part of the starter or are they separate units?
cheers

Solenoid is part of the starter. You should be able to use extensions to undo the bolts past the downpipe (someone confirm this please?)
I'm 90% sure the DP can stay on. It's 2 bolts for the starter motor. Shouldn't be THAT hard to undo although will be tricky.
Make sure you disconnect the battery 1st to avoid shorting stuff when the main lead from the starter is off as it's not fused.
Yes definitely disconnect the battery.
But it's not hard to get off. Two bolts, one on each side.

Really you have to remove the exhaust? I only undid the power cable and the starter signal wire then undid the two bolts that hold it in and it fell out, after disconnecting my battery of course... might be easier if you get under the car but then again I don't have any of the splash shields under my wagon...
