Is it possible to remove the gearbox out of a 96 TE 4cyl auto without removing the engine? Are there any articles/guides on doing this?
The gearbox in my sons car just died no warning..... just cacked it...no drive at all in any direction?
Thanks

is an easy although heavy removal

If you have removed a trans before, is exactly the same

From on top
Remove airfilter box, piping etc
Remove wiring from trans (speedo sensor is above the RH drive shaft and has a metal clip)
Remove carbon canister (to make access easier)
Remove trans lines, hook them up out of the way
Remove battery, batery box and top bracket (is only 1 bolt to remove)
Remove shifter cable
Remove 4 top bell housing bolts

Under car,
Remove LHS splash guard
Drop fluid
Remove engine pipe
Remove cross member complete with front roll stop
Remove drive shafts
Remove rear mount and bracket from trans (engine will now rock but is still supported fine by 2 end mounts)
Remove inspection plate, 4 bolts for torque converter to flex plate
Remove starter

Now support engine and trans, best to use trans jack under trans end. You will now need to remove gear box mount, allow engine to swing down a few inches and then hang engine on engine hanging brace or you could improvise here. Next step with mount removed on LHS is to remove the 2 remaining bell housing bolts and slide back about 1 1/2 inches and work the trans out. It is a tight fit with the K frame but if the engine is at the correct angle will come out with a few mm to spare.

Think that covers it, hope this helps

I have not done much work at all on Mitsubishi's or front end drive cars(worked mostly on rear wheel drive cars and motorbikes). I have access to an engine hoist etc.So we might give it a go?
Thanks for the info!

To be honest, if you have taken out a RWD auto, there is little difference here only the engine is sideways and you have 2 drive shafts, aside from that the principle is the same

I'm hoping the trouble is in the torque converter, there is a whirring noise coming from the bell housing area and absolutely no drive at all from the transmission. My guess is it's stripped the converter because it happened after my son did some hard acceleration...well as hard as a 2.4L can accelerate, it shuddered a bit then nothing. The car has about 300k on it mostly country K's.
Cheers
