not sure whats going on but i understand my car has a 72 lt tank.so why when my fuel light comes on and the gauge reads empty do i fill up and only get no more than 55lts in????its got me stuffed.am i the only one?
cheers
Sounds like the fuel sender may have gone - I had the same issue. Do a search in here, there's a pretty good writeup on how to replace it. From memory, around $90 from Mitsubishi for a new one.

Nah mate, mine does it too.
We only have 70ltr tank and I'm sure it's semi split configiration. I don't use the fuel guage, I trust the trip computers fuel used an found is more accurate.
Says I used 55ltr and when I fill, is half a ltr out.
Ummm, this prob has just started in my wife's VR-X. Will look into it.... thanks guys!

Seems to be fairly common with the AWDs. A number of the hire cars i've used have done the same.
Mine uses 50-55 litres when the light comes on. I actually prefer it this way, hard to run out of petrol with so much left.

My fuel light comes on at about the same too, around 54-55, pretty sure its normal as mine has always done it.
But yeah I trust the trip meter more.

The fuel light in my TF comes on at about 47 litres... Maybe it's a magna thing?

Hey guys.
It's due to the split fuel tank config.
It will use one side of the fuel tank causing the guage to go down faster than normal. There is an internal mechanical pump that pumps from one side to the other while driving.
You would prob notice that it would say empty at one stage then later on, it will come back up to nearly a quarter. This is as the fuel is transfered between the two sides.
Its not a faulty guage or sender. Totally normal.
Yeah use the trip computer. They are very acurate.

Never had mine behave like that. The light comes on and stays on, regardless of the situation and the gauge doesn't fluctuate, except down :(
I have gotten 62 litres in a fill-up, but that was after driving to work for 2 days with the fuel light on.
OK, so my bad - read things wrong. Thanks for the replies, makes me understand the fuel gauge behaviour more than I did.

Another addition to this to 'ponder' over..
At 55litres used, this leaves only 15l in a full tank, or around 100km of city driving... (in an AWD :P)
So, I'm not surprised to see it come on so early.
My light usually comes on just after the trip computer has told me I have somewhere between 100km-90km left
(
and it's really annoying as once the light is on, the distance to empty goes to --...
I mean com'on..
Surely you can give me a countdown to at least 20-30km's can't you.... :(

I agree when that happens nothing to keep you informed so you then have to switch to the odometer or trip meter and guess STUPID.

or you could use the Fuel Used... I've found that really accurate.

I normally have mine set to avg fuel, but as soon as the fuel light comes on I switch to fuel used. Is always accurate to within .1/.2 litres.

Yeah... But that relies on the fact that your wife hasn't just thrown in some random amount of fuel since you last reset it to know how much fuel is left in the tank... :P

meh, who lets their wife drive their car? :P
but seriously, you say that the light comes on at around 15L left... so what's the issue? once the light comes on, you know you've got a good 12 - 15L left in the tank, so take note of the fuel used when the light comes on.
if your wife is putting fuel in the car, but not enough to turn the fuel light out, then
cheers,

ROFL.. It's her car.. Mine is the AE71 in pieces out the back... :P
Yeah... one day I must let the light come on, then drive it till she dies (with a 5l can in the back) to find out exactly how much is in there....
The 'other' problem with that is that sometimes it comes on, then the next time you turn the car off, and back on again, it 'mysteriously' goes out again for a few more km's.
But, it's pretty meh usually, except for those one or two weeks when funds are absolultely dry, and we need to avoid driving as much as possible until more cash comes in.
