my RE92 B'stones, original, have done about 60k and might have 20k left, and I'm thinking about what to get when they go. The RE92's seem fine except that a bit more grip would be good. I'm also looking for nice ride, long mileage, and quiet.
Any thoughts, anyone?
Thanks in advance.
You can get a nice ride, long mileage, and quiet.
Or you can get more grip. i've just been through all that, now running Ecopia ep100 and happy with grip, won't be able to judge wear for a while yet
So you could stick with Bridgestone and go the next more expensive tyre than the re92. A bit more grip, a few less miles and you won't notice the ride or noise difference.

I've recently just changed over to Good Year Assurance,(about $135 ea) standard size from the RE92 after many years. Happy with them so far, quiet, grippy, silca compound and big improvement over the RE92. Steering feels more precise and lighter even after 7000k's although new tyres always feel better than worn ones. I swore I'd never purchase another Dunlop or associated product again after some bad experiences and crap service many years ago but when they throw a $100 back with 4 tyres I'll certainly try them. Made in Taiwan or some foreign land. Not sure about longevity yet but they were trying to sell me a different model for good mileage but i told them quiet would be nice so they suggested these but have a slightly shorter life.
You've done well if you're going to get 80k out of the RE92. I run 34psi and I reckon 50 -60k would be the best i could do.
BTW Good Year have a promo on again but the catch here might be "selected Goodyear Tyres" Buy 3 get one free.
"On sale until 10th April 2010 or while stocks last. Must buy 3 selected Goodyear tyres on the one invoice to qualify. Applies to selected Goodyear branded passenger and light truck tyres. Must be bought and fitted at Goodyear Autocare. Normal service and fitting charges apply on all 4 tyres. Offer excludes fleet, commercial and account customers. Not available with any other offer."
There's plenty of other decent tyres I'm sure always depends on your wallet. Had some TOYO transas Teos which were pretty decent on a subaru.

What size mate? I currently have Bridgstone ER300 which are a higher end Bridgstone and am currently upto 60,000k's from them and thats on an AWD.
They are dead quiet, grip well, and long lasting. Very highly recommend them mate.

I ran RE92's on three different magnas since my new TE in 1996. They do a lot of gravel road running and used to average 55 -60000Km a set. The last set lasted just 35000km and were evenly worn right out. They have just mucked up good product. Tried Turanza' instead but I would put them in the nice ride, good grip catagory and were also showing their age at about 30000km when traded. I am using Michelin xm1+ on the Verada, have'nt had it long enough to quote milage but ride and braking are excellent.

bridgstone adrenalin potenza re001, just about kill it in my opinion, plenty of grip, altho a little noisy when cornering, but meh grip is better than noise,
and are extremely grippy in the wet, im comparing them to sava intensa, which is obviously nothing to go off, but with the reoo1 i have way more confidence cornering at speed....

Hey rackamateur.
Those Turanza's you would have tried and ot 30k out of are the ER30's. I agree on that milage. The new ER300's are a totally different tyre, not related to the ER30's at all. They are the ones that i Very highly recommend and have already got 60k out of and still going.
Altera, i am looking at the adrenalins next. When you say noisy, is that just in cornering only? They are not noisy in a straight line are they? Also, what sort of nosie is it? A typical hi pitch noise or just more of a road noise?
How worn are yours now? I have had tyres that have get very noisy when they run low on tread to the point of unbarable. My currenty ER300's are still dead quiet even when 3/4 worn.
I want the Adrenalins next but am worried about the noise factor, thats all.
Also, do they track or try and pull you straight like you are in tram tracks? Have also had tyres like that and hated them. The ER300's are a very neutral tyre and have no tram tracking characteristics which is great.

Have the ER300's on my Magna, almost 20,000kms in and still great. For a general purpose road tyre I can't fault them.

Agree on the grip but the treadwear on the tyre is horrendous - my last front pair lasted around 13,000km, despite an in-spec wheel alignment. The Adrenalins have a habit of rolling out on the edges of the tyre, especially with fwds on an in-spec camber.
So after going through 8 RE001s in the last 2.5yrs, I've now switched to Toyo Proxies 4, which while they dont have the same grip as the Adrenalins in the dry, and are a little noisier due to the agressive tread, they are quite impressive in the wet, and with a harder compound I am hoping this set lasts beyond 22,000 for treadwear.
Dave_au's Tyre History
215/50 R16s - RE92s - good stock tyre, not brillant for grip.
215/50 R16s - Potenza G3s - good tyre, did tend to get chewed up slightly.
225/50 R17s - Faulken FK452s - very disapointed, soft compound that wore quickly but little grip in dry or wet.
225/50 R17s - Adrenalins RE001 - see above comments.
225/50 R17s - Proxies 4 - fingers crossed, dry grip not brilliant but not looking to win races.

the best tyres ive used is
Dunlop SP SPORT 300E very grippy tyre in wet and dry
Brigstone Adrenalins RE001
Very grippy almost a semi slick but quite expensive
But i had these on a rwd car, the supercat tyres on my magna are average, nothing to rave about and Falkens are ok for a cheap tyre.

Just put new front tyres on my wagon. Bridgestone RE92s. I know they do the job well, and wear well (evenly and slowly), so why experiment?
You can get grippier tyres but they wear out quicker.
You can get longer lasting tyres but they may not have good grip.

Thanks for all the comment everyone, the RE92s are 205/65 R15. They might even last another 30k, which would make 90k altogether. I wouldn't call myself a granny driver, I often drive quite carefully but if I don't hesitate to push it if I think the situation calls for it. We have B'stone Turanzas (16") on our Falcon wagon, have done 60k and seem about half worn, and they seem to have slightly better grip than RE92s.
Thanks again, any further comment most welcome.

i went to 225/55/16 from the standard 215/60/15 and made a big difference in grip levels. I got yokohama DNA dB Decibel on the front and i am very happy with them, very quiet, almost silent on smooth blacktop. Grip levels are great, I would get wheel spin alot on wetroad takeoffs or when giving it stick in the dry and now it doesnt happen. not sure on wear characteristics yet, not on there long enough.

only in cornering i found them noisy, the sound resemble's a 4wd with all terrain tyres rolling on the road, not exactly like it but you get the picture, and on the straight you can hardly hear them, nothing major to say the least, mine are 235/45/17 ,50% worn on the front and 80% on the back, they were installed on the car in 08 with 142100 kms on the clock ,the car now has 176333kms , altho they are expensive, tyres are one thing i will not skimp on

Same here Robssei. Have gone that size on all my Rada's.
Best thing anyone can do if they have standard rims. As you said, grip levels are massively increased and you also protect your rim from gutter rash if others drive it.
Thanks Altera. Yeah i think i will give them a go after my Er300's finally go. I know they are expensive but as you said, well worth it. In my 225 55 16, i can get ER300's for $200ea and the Adrenalins for approx $225 ea.
Noise was the only thing that worried me, thats all, as the ER 300's are silent. They are a great tyre but lack just a little wet cornering and braking ability.
So yhey haven't become noisy as they have worn down at all?
