View Full Version : ABS Brakes?
Hi everyone,
I have a 99 TH Exec 3.5L. Was just wanting to know if this model definitely has ABS?
I've searched around but couldn't really find any definitive answers.
Haven't locked up the brakes hard enough to find out :-P

This (http://www.racv.com.au/wps/wcm/connect/racv/internet/primary/my+car/advice+_+information/car+road+tests/new+car+reports/large+cars/new+car+report+-+mitsubishi+magna+th+(1999-)) link (an RACV roadtest from June 1999) says no, it was only available as an option pack on the TH Executive.
edit: reading that further, it states the Sports had airbags as an option, none standard, yet my TH Advance has both? Always thought the Sports was aboce the Advance, so guessing someone took the option.

Few ways of going around it.
1) Slam on your brakes. You lock them up - no ABS
2) Do you have an ABS light that comes on the dash for its pre-check thing?
3) In your engine bay on the brake booster, the master cylinder will only have 2 metal brake lines going to the ABS pump/unit whatever. if it has 4 metal lines it does not have ABS (one line goes to each caliper)
4) If there is only 2 brake lines coming out of the master cyl. follow them to the ABS unit usually behind the headlight, here you will see about 765 million other brake lines too. means you have ABS.

sports was the sports model,
your exe didnt have abs standard, unless it came as an added option from factory
the advance is a safety pack model, that featured ABS brakes, and twin air bags as standard, i think it came with hardned valve guides for anyone wanting to run them on LPG too

I would not lock your brakes up just to find out unless you want to risk flat spots. the other options would be either to try and locate the ABS unit which is normally mounted against the firewall on the passenger side. It's a large rectangular looking metal box with hydraulic brake lines going to and from it. The workshop manual will give you a better idea or on the data plate check the option codes, on the TJ series 1, it was "B14" for ABS option . TJ Series 2Executives had ABS standard from what I have read.

All too complicated! Just take the front wheel off and look for the pickup and toothed wheel at the back of the disc. Or just crank it into lock and have a look-see with a torch if you can't find your car jack. lol

the abs unit is on passenger side firewall, was at the front tuffy in the second gens. but yeah check for light on dash when key is turned on, or look at a steering knuckle for an ABS sensor/wire
edit lol max ya got there first!
