I have a 2001 TJ Advance and was wondering before I take it in for service/fix on any ideas what might be the issues.
1) When in Reverse or Drive but hardly moving on at a stand still it sounds like a rattle in the engine but when I am moving and driving the noise is gone? Maybe engine mount making it off balance at idle?
Do stuffed engine mounts make your cars idle rough/noisy?
2) Air con making a loud grinding noise when turned on...has been fine previously, started with a squeel when on and now just a constant grinding sound. Compressor buggered?
Car has just ticked over 130,000kms.
Thanks in Advance.

Hmm, I hear a slight rattle at standstill / no acceleration, but that's after a bit of driving.
In my case, I'm suspecting I just need a new timing belt?
PS I don't now jack when it comes to diagnosis through sound.

could be the lifters, and you cant hear them with the load on the engine when moving...?
mounts can make the engine vibrate, but mine is soooo rooteed, and it makes no extra noise... but im not qualified or anything. just making my observation... :P

The compressor noise will be lack of oil/R134a gas or magnetic clutch stuffed. check to see if it engages when aircon is switched on. mine began to tap loudly due to low oil, still needs a recharge but the noise is gone. as for the rattle noise, you need to have someone put in gear, hold brakes plus handbrake on and you try to pinpoint where its coming from in the engine bay. may be exhaust heat shields or any number of things. lifters will be noisy at idle in and out of gear.

As your looking at the engine, drivers side by the looks of it, maybe towards centre a little bit.
When the engine is put in reverse the whole engine moves about and inch towards the firewall...is that normal?

check you mounts, but some movement is normal. I do know that some have had similar noises from incorrect tension on alternator/air con, powersteering or Timing belt. check the alternator and powersteering by pushing on the belt at the mid point along the longest stretch between pulleys. Aircon/alternator belt deflection should be 8.2-9.3mm and powersteering belt deflection should be 11.0-14.2mm. as for the timing belt it may be best to take it to your mechanic if the rest checks out and there is no obvious cause for the noise, better safe than sorry!!

Was a pulley tensioner loose. $50 to fix.
Found my air-con compressor needs replacing though.
$1100 for genuine Mitsubishi - Part only
or
$450 - Aftermarket brand new - Part only
Might go aftermarket I think...lol
