View Full Version : Pedders Springs?

Hey all, I have sourced a cheap set of used front and rear lows springs for the magna, which are Pedders branded.

Now, I'd like to say first, please do not speculate. Unless you are 100% sure, do not reply to this.

Okay, I was told before that Kings Springs make springs for Pedders, is that true?
I have also been told that Pedders springs sag really badly compared to Kings.

and

I want my car to handle really well on lows springs, is Pedders a good brand to buy, or should I just suck it up and pay the vendors on eBay $300 for new springs?

Ride quality isn't really that important, its more to do with handling of the car.

Thanks!!

This is not speculation, it is experience

Pedders ARE NOT made by Kings, they are a totally different spring

FamilyWagon will attest to this, his mothers KE had Pedders, we put in Kings and she says is like a new car. Pedders are well known for spring slap where the coils hit each other, pedders fix is a bit of garden hose over the top coils to shut them up

They also sag like bastards too, the last set I had in my KR the rears were almost on the bump stops after 6 months, Pedders solution, dont drive with a full tank and remove my sub (which was a single 12" and weighed bugger all)

Pedders are only worth what ever they are worth in scrap metal

My KL has original springs on it, after 105000km the nylon wrapped around the lower coils for a similar purpose have rubbed right through, So following the logic, standard springs must suffer from a fair bit of spring slap too.

Of course, they are that soft when they encouter a sudden hit they will slap...

im with you mate, my car is on peddars springs and shocks, its tight, more comfortable than kings and actually handles... (might be the 19's and strut brace LOL)

i have never had other springs in my magna, but ive been in plenty with kings and they are bumpy as shit, (i know you said you dont mind) ill give you a ride in mine, you have been in brendans, (pretty sure thats kings...?) same car pretty much (manual 3.5 etc...) youll be able to tell the difference... or lack of a difference in handling...

:roflwtf: What kind of advice is that? lol hmmmm, generally I don't think subs would weigh down a car on lows that bad would it now? Still on stocks but moving to Kings soon, I wonder if this is something I should think about...anyways, back on point

I'm interested to hear why/how people differ on opinions about Springs. From what I've been told (and this may amount to speculation), but from this forum, i have heard the same arguments about Peddars...I'd think it should warrant some thought though. Kings however, seem to be the preferred pick but hey that could be owners bias? Would the shocks have anything to do with added sensitivity? (on the bounce)

I had pedders springs and didnt have an issue, until i changed to Kings and realised how much better my car rode in comparison

Haha, yeah. Thats what I meant (probably came out wrong) lol. If their Springs are as quality as their advice, I'd probably look else where lol

the SPs are the highest of them all, it only sits marginally lower than stock but higher than all the others in the range (lows and super lows)
you can get them from Phillcom, one of this forum sponsors, you'll find more details in the sponsors section

King Lows and Low SPs are very similar spring rates (so they'll ride similar), the main difference is the ride height (30mm drop for SPs vs 45mm for Lows).

Springs are all you need, but give thought to new shocks at the same time. There's just as much labour involved to change the shocks as springs alone. Plus, if ride is what you're concerned about, I'd definitely get better shocks - I've found my car to ride better after being lowered, and I've put it down to better quality shocks (KYBs).

While you're going to be riding much firmer than stock, it'll still pale in significance to many other stock standard cars...

Cool thanks. I've been told to get lows, but I'll have a look at both

Ok well i'll check them out too. Where can i get the shocks from?
And is KYB the best brand to get? .. if it's a brand haha

Oh and also, how do you check what philcom sells, prices etc?

Thanks

General consensus is King Spring Lows + KYB Shocks = best bang (performance) for buck set up.

And yeah, KYB is a brand.

Jimmy, if you want some quality contact philcom for the following

Springs - Kings
Dampers - Bogue

KYB are an ok budget damper but they are average and Budget. Bogue are a little more but a lot better

I can fit them, if you look in my sponsors section you will see my contact details

JimmyRoyals

how much would i be looking at for the King lows plus Bogue dampers?
and as comparion, how much are KYB dampers?

Thanks

The difference between the two was $40 from phillcom when i bought mine. Unfortunately Boge availability varies wildly so you may have to settle for KYB's if you want them soon

I have the boge dampers and yep, they're great! Definitely worth the extra couple of dollars!
Phillcom are great too, dealt with Shawn a couple of times now & his prices are damn hard to beat

Also, a good thing to note, even though it's an annoying job, when lowering it's a good idea that once lowered, to loosen then retighten the suspension bushes to allow them to re-set to the new height. The bushes are rubber and are set at standard height, when you lower your car you place the bushes under a kind of pre-load if you don't re-set them.. Not a major issue but definitely causes them to fail prematurely!

A little late to this thread... however, I fitted a set of used Pedders (sports ryder) to my TL about 6 months ago and my life has been miserable lately. The spring height looks like a set of superlows (based on pics I've seen) which suggests sag. While the car looks OK it rides poorly, every bump and imperfection on the road is felt. Passengers in my car comment on how rough it is. Not ideal. My next step will probably be a set of King Lows or SPs, finances permitting.

Not my view - most are of the opinion that kings are of superior quality. I'll let you know once I've fitted them! The Pedders I currently have are not satisfactory from a ride quality perspective & I'm willing to try the Kings.
