Hey everyone,
On thursday night on the way to the meet i was following Life down the motorway. At one point we had to gun past a truck, as soon as i gave it some gas it shifted down, not cleanly i might add, and the check engine light came on. Once i turned the car off and on the light disappeared. Later that night i had realised my A/T button in the middle console stopped working. I never drive with it on and im not sure what this means...Im not sure if this is a linked complication but my transmission is flaring and double shifting ( 1st to 2nd, revs a bit and reshifts to 2nd then 3rd etc...)
Any help is much appreciated!

Thanks guys,
BR14AN

You don't know what the button does, but you know its not working? mmmmmm

The A/T power button does little, other than shift the full power/throttle shift points up.

Look at the TPS for problems with shifting. Probably why your check light came on too. It crapped out when you gunned it.

Might mean that the globe has gone. Wouldn't worry about it, pretty useless function anyway.

What you are experiencing is transmission flare, often caused by a malfunctioning TPS.

Alright, well im putting the car in for a massive service in two weeks, going to get the oil replaced ( magna tick noise happening) transmission fluid flushed and now the TPS. Should run like a dream after! hopefully..

Have you check the A/T power swith with mulitmeter on ohms to see if the switch is working right.

Have a check for something simple like Fuses, too. We had a drama with a Power/Economy function in a 1st Gen, where a wire across the front of drivers seat (under the carpet) seemed to melt-out, luckily didn't really damage the insulation in the rest of the loom.

Somehow, fuses were not affected in our case... we ran a new wire and the power/economy function came back to life - watched it ever after and whatever caused the problem never recurred. (car is now wrecked).

I'd try simple (and cheap!) things like checking fuses, checking wiring connectors for corrosion etc. The member who suggested the TPS sounds on the money - I'd seriously consider looking for a wrecker part to swap-in..... otherwise your "big service" will be a severe wallet-raping if TPS is involved. IMHO.

Btw, my PWR light has been dead for years and just yesterday someone pulled out right in front of me and I slammed on the anchors, locked it up to a dead stop.. after driving off I noticed it suddenly started working.

The function has always worked but the light never did.. might be a bit hard given your transmission is playing up.. but basically if you floor it in PWR on versus off (down is on, up is off) you should feel different shift points rev-wise.

its the MAGNAPOWER button!
did you check to make sure that it isnt just the globes been dislodged out of the cluster?

+1 I actually laughed!

I'm agreeing with TPS, power button will put 2nd gear shift point (flat) up, for my TR it was 5000 to 5500. does for other gears to I assume, but to peak out 3rd... your going too fast...

like I said, a pretty useless function! Who wants to rev a tired old Magna engine and gearbox that high? I never see more than 3,500 rpm in spirited driving, 2.500 in normal driving.

3000GT motor in the D loves revving out to 7000RPM :P Love the PWR button..
